How would you feel if your mom wanted you to be a priest?
Jesse Rodriguez P3
To Marilyn: If my mom wanted me to be a priest i wouldn't approve of it. Unless my goal was to become a priest, but it's not. I would want to do what i want to do and not what others want me to do. In Tony's case though it looks to me as if he doesn't want to disobey or ruin the traditions so he seems to have no choice.
Marilyn Castellanos p3
To jr. i agree with you i would not approve to be something i dont want to be!
and that Antonio doesnt want to disobey his parents but i think that, thats just a test for him!?
idk!
Jesse Rodriguez P3
Okay so I just finished reading chapter 2. Some pretty interesting stuff happened. Someone died, the talk of fulfilling dreams, and spiritual illusions. I have a question. How does the legend of La Llorona relate to Antonio?
Michelle Garcia P.5
To Jesse: I don't think that La Llorona has to do with anything... I think that his brothers just want to tease him and make him scared... But what do you think of the way Lupito looked at Antonio?? I thought he might've wanted to kill him next if I hadn't finished reading chapter 2.
Jesse Rodriguez P3
Yeah that was crazy with Lupito I thought he was gonna kill Antonio as well but he ended up asking him for his blessing. It looked as if Antonio was an actual priest the way it was described during that part.
MIchelle Garcia P.5
To Jesse: I agree... but the whole asking for the blessing thing was confusing at first but it got me thinking... maybe he sort of knew Antonio was to bcome a priest or something...
Lauren Miner Period 3
I really love the way Rudolfo Anaya writes. He makes Antonio's dream in chapter one very vivid.
Michelle Garcia P.5
To Lauren Miner: Very true. This allows our minds to visualize what he writes.
Corrina Arzola P.3
Hi,
So I just finshed up chapter Tres I was getting lost with some of the spanish words, but I did get some help.
In Chapter Dos I did get lost for a second, during the whole wild 'Animal' chase.
One of the guys said Chavez was dead, but Chavez was the brother of the dead sheriff and the one that said 'Shoot', so who died??
Michelle Garcia P.5
To Corrina: In chapter two, Lupito dies, but I think when they say "Chavez" they mean the last name of the person so the sheriff could've been Chavez too. It is confusing but if you read it more slowly you can understand it more... and I do agree with the spanish words. I have to ask my parents on what they mean.
I am happy that some of you are really out there doing this. I just hope the others who should be joining in do so soon.
As far as Anaya's style goes, there is a lot of foreshadowing. Paying attention to small details will help with your overall understanding of what is quite an end result.
I just finished chapter -->DOS<-- and i thought it was pretty interesting with everybody trying to kill Lupito but i kind of got lost because i didnt know where he was trying to hide???
Michelle Garcia P.5
To Mr.B: Like what small parts in the story are you refering to that are examples of foreshadowing?
Corrina Arzola P.3
To Alexx.
Lupito was running obviously, because he did not want to be killed.
He was hiding from all the men in the woods sort of place, where a river runs through.
=]
Marilyn Castellanos P3
what do you all think about Antonios Character?
i think that his character in chapter starts changing !
Jesse Rodriguez P3
I think Antonio is starting to change to. He keeps on thinking about Lupito's death and the actions of other and wonders what will happen to them.
Michelle Garcia P.5
I think that Antonio's destiny is going towards the spirit. Only because (If you've read up to chapter 6 already) he sees things through dreams and similar events have taken place or will take place.
Lauren Miner Period 3
How are would you feel if your brothers were at war?
TO:Lauren Miner
I have two brothers who are in the military, one is in the air force and has been to Iraq two times.
The other is in the Navy and is leaving in March. It's very tough to accept and to also never or rarely be able to talk to them.
About Antonio as a character.
Since the incident with Lupito I did notice the different actions and the change of thoughts, the sort of loss of being able to focus.
Marilyn Castellanos p3
to robin
if my brothers were at war i would feel sad but at the same proud for carring for their country's peace!
Michelle Garcia P.5
To Lauren Miner: I had a cousin in Iraq who is like a fourth brother to me. I could definatly relate to Antonio on how he felt when his brothers were at war. It's hard to go through and hard to take in all at once but once they come back you feel better again. But when Antonio's brothers want to leave somewhere else again it's hard to understand that they just got back but then they want to leave right away.
Dylan Rout period 5
Well I had to re-read chapters 1,2,3 cause I got a little confused. But one thing i noticed at the end of chapter 1 is somthing Antonio brings up in his dream. He talks about Ultimas owl and he says how the owl brings the babys from Limbo to heavan. Well that answers some question to the people who were asking about what happens to the babys that die and go to Limbo. I hope
Brianna Baugh P5
To Dylan: I have been reading, and i've noticed that his dreams have to do a lot with Antonio's life. He will dream about something and wake up like it's a nightmare or something and then in the story a major event happens.
Lauren Miner Period 3
To Brianna: In chapter 1, I think, Antonio talks to his mother about his birth and what happened and everything that she says is exactly what happened in his first dream.
To Lauren: Ok. I'm getting confused about the story. Antonio has his dreams, that are true in his real life. So i'm thinking that, that part of him has to do with Ultima and her "powers". Right?
to Brianna
Well Brianna back in the begining of the book, Ultima told Antonio and his family up front that since he was the last one that she help give birth to. That there is going to be a special bon between them to. May be there special bond is a strange power between them two
Michelle Garcia P.5
To Dylan, Briana, and Lauren: Okay... Dylan, for one thing I don't think babies go to limbo at all if they die at that stage. And for everyone... Antonio's dreams do have huge significance. I think that his destiny is headed towards Ulitima's (with the information given.
Lauren Miner Period 3
To Brianna: I am pretty sure that his dreams do involve Ultima's powers. In chapter 1 Ultima says to Antonio's mother about Antonio, "Ket it be. This was the last child I pulled from your womb, Maria. I knew there would be something between us." So I am assuming that Antonio is a great deal like Ultima.
Michelle Garcia P.5
In what ways does Antonio represent a Luna and a Marez? What effect would this have on his destiny?
Lauren Miner Period 3
I am a bit confused about what a Luna and a Marez mean.
Michelle Garcia P.5
To Lauren: A Luna (I guess) is the mother's side and the Marez is the dad's side. How do the traits of each interfere with his destiny? I Also just finished chapter 9 and I think it's cool how similar events happen in the story from his dreams.
Michelle Garcia P.5
I just finished reading chapters 10 and 11. I was really scared to visualize what had happend in chapter 10. I also noticed that Antonio went through the same motions as his uncle; but why? In chapter 11 I was uncomfertable with the whole golden carp thing because I believe in God in all but now I'm confused on where Antonio's choices will go...
Marissa Munoz p.5
okay hopefully this time will work! Mr. B i am having troubles with computers like you wouldnt even know.
anyway i was a bit confused with page.56. It is Antonio's first day of school and i guess the mom is in a "thing" when praying for Antonio's future. Then Ultima and his mother are talking and someone tell Antonio to " go, go!" I dont understand why they told him to go. ??
Marissa Munoz p.5
and another question!!
Can someone please explain to me Ultima's Owl that follows Antonio around? Does it mean her spirts? (Ultima)
Brianna Baugh p5
Marissa :)
Well, like they talked about before. Remember the witch with a wolf, and they shot the wolf and found the witch killed by a gun shot. It's like they are the same with the animal just in a different form.
Marilyn p3
to lauren miner
luna means moon in the story it refers to the Antonios moms family for being quite !and marez is oceans in spanish refering to antonios dads family as loud and wild!
Marilyn p3
to marrisa munoz
the owl is ultimas spirit!
Michelle Garcia P.5
I just finished reading chapters 12 and 13. I have some knew thoughts that are boiling inside my head. I think that Ultima is a witch now. When her owl attacked Tenorio... it might've knocked down the blessed needles and that allowed her to walk through the door. I sense something fishy going on.
Marissa Munoz p.5
To Michelle Garcia
Obviously you are much futher in the book then i am, but i do agree that Ultima may be a witch. =]
The way she heals cuts, makes Antonio fall asleep with the touch of her hand, to knowing what happens to people is a little fishy if you ask me!
and thank you Brianna! ;)
Michelle Garcia P.5
To Marissa: I did just finish reading 14, 15, and 16 and more suspicous things are going on but what do you think about Antonio's destiny so far (from where you're at). At first I saw him going towards Ultima's path, then down the priest's path, and now I just don't know.
Marissa Munoz p.5
I think it is quite funny how tony keeps refering himself as a man. For instance when the pricipal shook his hand for passing to the third grade. He said the principal shook his hand like a man.
And i also feel bad for Antonio. On the amount of the pressure Antonios mom puts on him about the priest thing. "oh i knew he would be a man of learning, maybe a piest!". It just make me feel anxious while im this because he just passed 1st grade! What first grader is all ready thinking about all these responsiblities?? When i was in first grade, i thought about coloring books, not being a WOMAN!
Marissa Munoz p.5
To Michelle
Well i am am chapter 10. I know i know! Im going to read this book all night! ;)
From right now i thnk he is till heading oward the priest path. He obviously likes t make is mom happy. But i could be wrong! Do you agree or is there things i am totally missing because i am not that fair yet?
Jesse Rodriguez P3
I've been busy lately so i'm pretty far behind. But i'll get through it. I finished chapter tres and something seemed kind of odd to me. It said that Antonio's dad Gabriel and Ultima were the only adults he knew who ate before communion. Why is that so?
Lauren Miner Period 3
To Jesse: I am behind too...oops. But I noticed the same thing. I think that it may be brought up later on in the book because it seems significant and may be foreshadowing something but I can't really tell.
Michelle Garcia P.5
To Marissa: I think you've got it. As you further in the story it gets more and more complex but you can still figure things out.
To Jesse and Lauren: I think that the reason the father and Ultima can eat before communion is because they aren't as "religious".
Good work everyone going into the last day of break YUCK! I am glad that most of you have taken to talking about the difference between the two sides of the family and how that affects Antonio's development. I am also glad that you have begun to focus on the nature of Ultima. Try not to prescribe our society's definition of "witch." She is a healer, a "good witch" persay. The daughters of Tenorio are the evil witches.
Michelle Garcia P.5
To Mr.B: A good witch? I think a witch is a witch but in any sense she doesn't use her abilites for bad.
To anyone: I am almost finished with the book... I have three chapters to go, but anyway, I got a little confused in chapter 18. Right before he got his new suit for his first communion.
Michelle Garcia P.5
I finished the book! Woohoo! The ending of the story really had me. When the rest of you finish you'll understand what I mean but it's just so sad...
Dylan Rout period 5
To Michelle:
Ive finished the book today to, AND WOW! Yea it was a shocker. What I want to clear up is, Antonio saw all those other people that died in his dream, cause he saw them in real life die, and being that he has that connection with Ultima. He has thar power or whatever you call it.
Mr Bostock (or dude)
So she wasnt a witch, but a healer. But her owl? That doesnt seem like anything related to healing, but not witchcraft either, So what else is there?
Marissa Munoz
To Dylan
Im almost done..
but im actually starting to belive that Ultima has everything to do with "holyness" for some reason. Maybe she is an angel or i dont know. Because bad witches and good witchs? I dont buy it. ;)
