Example discussion question: 1. What is George's motivation to keep Lenny around?
159 comments:
i think that Georges motivation to keep Lennie around is because he is a good, hard worker. even though Lennie is not a very intelligent person as many other people. but the truth is i think that without Lennie around George would be very lonely and miss him. like in the beginning where george say i would be so much better off with out having to look after you Lennie. and lennie say well ill just leave right now so you can have your peace and be better off with out me. and georges reaction to that was no you stay with me and tells lennie if you get into any trouble while at our new job you try to remeber to come back here and hide, and ill come get you. and when George tells Lennie to remember at the interview with the boss to remember to say nothing. later that night George asks him if he remember s and Lennie does. George tell Lennie that he is very proud of him for remembering.
Raymond b. per 5
i completely agree that George keeps Lennie around because he is a hard worker but also it makes him look like he is also a hard worker. By the descriptions of Lennie and George i would rather hire Lennie then George.
---> Maryna L. <----
--->Period: 5<---
yes i agree. i would also would hire Lennie instead George to me George is just to bossy and it has to be his way or like no way. i can also see that he really cares for Lennie especial because of Lennie is Mental which to me is really sad. But besides the point this book is very detail and i'm really liking it.
Raul U. per 5
I think Georges motivation to keep Lennie around is that George depends on Lennie to get them this job on the ranch because he is such a good worker. I also agree that George also keeps him around for company because without Lennie
George would be a lonely person.
What do you guys think Lennies obsession with mice is about?
--->Maryna L<---
---> Period: 5<---
i think Lennie's obsession with mice is that he just wants a friend yeah he has George but George put Lennie down a lot of the time and with a mouse he can pet them and just be there for him. maybe its because he feel like he is need by someone. instead of him feeling like he needs to be taking care of.
Get me??
i think that Lennie's obsession with the mice is a mental thing, i don't really think that it relates to him being lonely. I also agree that if it was because he is lonely that would be something that would occupy his needs for a friend, because George is more of a boss then a friend.
--->Maryna L<---
--->Period: 5<---
i agree that yes George is more of a boss than a freind just becuase George is always puting Lennie because of his mental disorder
Denisse fofiu per 5
I can agree with all of you, i think that George keeps Lennie around because he makes him look good, and even though Lennie gets him in trouble alot, they get the job done and nobody can say anything bad to them. Without Lennie George would be lonely because they have been together since they were younger, and they have been taveling together for a long time.
denise fofiu per 5
I think that Lennie is so obsessed with mice and rabbits because it's something to keep him company while he's alone and while they are walking to the ranches. It can also be a mental thing, because i dont think a normal person would carry around a dead thing in their pocket for hours and pet it.
I think that George is motivated to keep Lennie around because he knows that without him Lennie will die. Lennie will cause his ow death either by saying something wrong or doing something wrong.
MIGUEL.S FROM PERIOD 5
I also believe that George is motivated to keep Lennie around because like Raul said he keeps him company.He might not admit it but he likes Lennie. I also think he keeps him around because he feels that it is his obligation.
denise fofiu per 5
In the book when Candy, Lennie, and George are talking about the house they want, what do they mean when they say, "i bet we could swing her" and when they say "we'll do her"?
miguel.s from 5th period
I think that Lennie is obsessed with mice because they do not scold him like most people. They are company that are silent most of the time.
---->Maryna L.<----
---->Period:5<----
----> To Denisse<-----
OKay well this is what i got from when they say that is that since their short on money they well talk her in to it to give them the house for that much instead of the original price. i hope that helps a little.
I think George keeps Lennie around because he is a big strong hard worker and helps him gett jobs,as long as he aviodes talking. Also George would be lonly traviling around the country without lennie. I feel that deep down inside George needs Lennie and truly loves him.
Geovanni Hernandez per.3
I think George is just trying to use Lennie to earn money since Lennie is a very hard worker.I think Lennie should be a little more smarter and do something about George taking advantage of him.

omg i am very upset
all i have to tell you is dont start to work on th MWDS until your done with the book because i was writing stuff down so i can work on it while i i am gone foe like 5 day and im so upset about what i read. dont do it it sucks unless you dont care but i suggest you dont it ruins the whole thing. im so so very very upset....man this sucks you guys
ahhhhhhh. man now i have to read the rest to really figure out how it happened...... MANNNNN!!!!! dang im sad....ahhhhhhhhhhh
okay im done being upset okay no im not well ill go now all sad and depressed
what ever you do dont do it!!!!
Raymond b. per 5
the "will swing her" comment was about changing the price because they didn't have enough money.
so i have to agree with Maryna
Raymond b. per 5
i have a question about Lennie's obsession with the rabbits and mice?
Is there a relation to them that would be important to notice or is it just two random animals?
okay soo...i barely started reading today!! I think that George puts up a front that he would live a better life without lennie, but really he wouldnt. yes, lennie may be like a child but he tries his very best to get georges approval. i think georges sticks with lennie because i think he feels like he needs to kno that he's dominant..? i dont kno thats juss how i see it. n i agree with what the others say that lennies "hard working" cuz like i said, he tries his best. so far i think this will be an interesting book. at first i thought it was going to be LAME, but i kinda likee it. ;) well buuhhh byyyeee
[this is takin me forever cuz i forgot my freakin password!!]
---> Maryna<---
--->period 5<---
okay miss MELinyerFACE dont forget to say who you are silly even though i know but others dont but all ihave to say is dont try to do the MWDS until you read the whole thing okay so listen to to me please....

i think his obsession with mice and rabbiites are that their soft and you know how he likes soft things and thier small enough to fit in his hand
--->Maryna<---
--->period 5<---
well good morning everyone..... okay so i was reading last night and i realized that i have something in commen with Crooks. while i was doing research i read he has a crooked back and hey so do i...so yea its not all that great but at least i have something in common with one of them
huh
Raul U. per 5
I'm commenting to Geovannis comment.
well there isnt very much that Lennie can do about George beacaue Lennie has the mentality of a five year old so I dont think Lennie realizes that George is taking advantage of him.
"I think Lennie should be a LITTLE MORE SMARTER and do something about George taking advantage of him." Haha that was cute Geovannie. Well first off Lennie was born Mentaly challenged so theres nothing he can do about getting smarter thats just the way he is. Also i think that George is deffenitly not "Using" Lennie. Sure Linnie helps him out with hard labor and stuff but if you think about it George dose way more for Lennie then Lennie does for him. George Keeps track of lennie, tells him whats right and rong, feeds him , helps his head get better when it hurts , helps him get jobs but most of all he helped Lennie esc.... well ill let yall find that part out on your own dont want to ruin the story for you.
Raymond b. per 5.
yeah i know that he likes soft thing but i don't think that all rabbits are small. Is this guy like really huge to be able to hold it in his hand? I know his description is that he is really big but i don't think he is that big
--->Maryna<---
--->period 5<---
dang i so dont get the ending like i just ended... what the heck is up with that man......but i wont ruin for all of you so ill just come back on sunday since i will be gone from wendsday to sunday so yea.......
Chelsea p.3 i have to agree with you guys. Lennie isnt the smartest like George said but he does get the job done. I would rather hire George because he isnt a lot to deal with where as Lennie getting people kicked out of the town for feeling a womans dress so george would be my best bet i would just be kind of hard to deal with his attitude.
Chelsea p.3
Lennie's obsession with mice and rabbits i feel is his way to have someone or something there with him that will never leave because its dead. I also think it was his way to cope with always being yelled at by George
Denise fofiu per 5
thank you Marina and Raymond for helping me understand that better.
----to Raymond---
i think that it's something to notice, because he liked to pet nice things,the end of the story would explain it all.
i wish i could explain it better aboutthe end, but i don't know how much people are done with the book.
denise fofiu per 5
okay well i finished the book on Sunday and i have a question about the ending, but i dont want to ruin it for those who havent read it yet so i'll ask on friday or something.
miguel.s from period 5
well yeah i have a question.
I was woundering what Crooker meant when he told Lennie that if George was to leave him they would put him in a booby hatch.
What is a booby hatch?
miguel.s from 5th period
i was wondering if you guys think that deep inside Crooker envys lennie because he has George as a compaign?
chris period 3
going back to miguels question, i dont think that he envies him up to this point but thats my opinion
chris per. 3
referring back to LOTF, could they both have a similarity in some way?
Andrea Santoyo Per. 3
So im about one third into the book. And I absolutely love it, im going to try and finish it today. Well I love George's and Lennie's relationship, I think they would be lost without eachother, and they share a great friendship. I like how he sticks up for him when others such as Curley pick on him. (:
Just for clarification: Booby hatch is basically insane asylum. Booby is a word people used to use for someone who was not very smart or with it.
Overall good job so far. I am really happy that so many of you are really involved in this conversation. Keep it up.
And to those of you who have finished, thanks for waiting on discussing the ending. This weekend should be a good time for that.

[ha yer rite maryna!]
okayy. sooo
wat ive read --
george n lennie went to the ranch and automatically george new who to avoid, [curely]. george, i would say, is very protective over lennie, which i think is very sweet (: other then curely, i dont think george n lennie have problems with the rest of their "room mates" <--i would call it idk. soo hopefully lennie doesnt do anything bad or anything that would trigger curely.
[QUESTION] theres one part i wanna get straight..
soo when it said that curelys girl gives slim n some other men the "eye" that means like..hmm flirting or something right.?
idk...juss thinkin [=
k bye
seems to me like everyone is almost done with the book!!!
i need to step up!
--->maryna<---
--->period 5<---
yes Melanie you need to step up but at least youre reading.
im proud of you you
:D
this is for raul or denise but for everyone i guess. i think that george keeps lennie around him because even though he is mean to lennie, he has emotional attachments towards him. it's kind of like tough love, and he promised lennie's aunt that he would watch over him.
seriously melanie haha im onn the same page you're on
what is sonofabitching mean i think i spelled it right sorry the book is packed away its towards the end of the of the book like page 105 maybe but chea leaving today hope ill get on this week.

i just finshed the book and i have to say that it is one of the best books that i have ever read. I think that i understood most of the shocking end.

well i think that "sonofabitching" means that he's complaing alot or he's kind of annoyed with the person.
i dont know, i depends were its said, i dont remember where they siad it, but i know they did.
Denise fofiu per 5
-----to miguel----
Well i think that they ment if george were to leave Lennie would they put him in an area that houses people who aren't all there.
this is 2 melanie
dont worry i need 2 step up 2 i am just crazy busy but i just need 2 find time
oh&&also "giving them the eye" yes it does mean flirting with them...lol
Chelsea
p.3
dont worry melanie im behind too but im catching up lolz
but yea i like this book so far. I think deep down George loves Lenny thats why he warns him ahead of time about curley and keeping his distance. I really dont like curley, how he gone ask a question and have an attitude. but, what chapter is eveybody on?????
Are we going to get a new question or are we all just suposed to talk to eachother about the book ?
Someone should come up with a good philosophical Question for us to talk about.
Ya chelsea i think they mean flirting. Curly is way insecure , but i dont blame him his wife dose seem like she getts around.
Denise fofiu per 5
----to Mr.Whitney---
yeah i think that we have to lead this all to another queation.
A question could be...
Do you think that if George wan't there for Lennie, and to protect him, would Lennie survive and suceed on his own?
Or would someone feel sorry for him and help him?
i agree alot with andrea. i think george's and lennie's relationship with one another is one of a kind because not alot of people have that kind of love with each other. and they kind of complete each other but not in a gay way. like george is a tough, smart guy and lennie is the innocent, nieve, slow guy. it's kind of like a big bro little bro thing going on between them. im not done with it but im getting there, i need like 30-40 more pages!! it's a very good book!
to denise...i think that maybe someone will try to help lennie but not stay with him forever like george does. i think it will be like a "good luck on your own" kind of thing with other people, or they might just rob or hurt lennie for the heck of it.
Geovanni Hernandez per.3
I was wondering why Crooks was trying to scare Lennie by telling him that George wasn't going to come back when George went out to town with friends.
i was just wondering what susy and clara's "fun" place was. is it a bar? or something adult like? im being serious i dont know.
are we supposed to answer any questions on this?
---Geo24----
What chapter is that in?
And thanx for responing Denise F .
I think It take a very un selfish persion to take care of Lennie, and back then every one seemed to be all for there selves. It was hard enough to fend for your self but having to take care of 2 people? Especialy one who is "slow" like lennie. Im not sure to many people would help him out.
What do you think?
Raul U. per5
to Denise
Well I don't think that Lennie would do to well on his own, but not just Lennie like Andrea said they would be lost without each other. Even though George puts Lennie down George really cares about him and needs him to be around.
Geovanni Hernandez per.3
In my opinion Crooks and the wife of Curley have some similarities. Crooks is a very lonely person like the wife of Curley. They both are mostly ignored in the book.They also pick on the weaker people like Lennie.
Geovanni Hernandez per.3
To Mr.Whitney
I dont know what chapter it is on but it is on pg.71.

What is curelys wifes name.??

nothing of it was pretty interesting....i dont think.
soo..im just going to read some more
hopefully i finish today so i can get started on my MWDS.
chelsea
p.3
I like the way on pg.70 Lenny is in a way protecting George the same way george protects lenny its sweet they kind of balance eachother out. Im still kind of confused on their relationship. I know Lenny's aunt brought up George but is that it to the matter or is there more but im just missing pieces???
to denise, yeah your right and one great example is when Curly was picking on Lennie. i think that that's how people will treat him. but at least Curly got the beating of his life! hahah it was pretty tight.
dang i just finished the book and i was seriously devasted on what George had to do to Lennie. i was pretty sad for awhile, it was pretty intense. i was wondering...would you ever to that to a good friend if you had to? i don't know if i would. but if anything i'd do it out of respect and honor for that other person on the opposite side of trigger. overall, i loved this book and would have never thought to read it if it wasn't for Mr.B, thanx.
oh and another thing...is George and Candy ever going to get their own land?
i think that george kees lennie around because its easier to get the job because of how big he is
ib think lennie likes mice because they are a friend to him and something that wont yell at him
Andrea Santoyo Perid 3.
I really like what Daniel said about Lennie and the mice. It makes a good point.
Well, I havent gotten very far from where i left off, but I really dont like Curly, he's rude, Slim seems like a nice guy so far. And I really like George, he has a strong personality. I think he and Lennie level eachother out.

Does anyone know what the last sentece on the last pg ment?
I was thinking that it ment, that maybe they wouldn't be able to get the house thev'e always wanted and talked about. But i dont know, can anyone help me?
Denise fofiu per 5
I so glad that Curly's wife got what was comming around to her, but i dont like what they had to do to Lennie.
Lennie and George are a funny pair, but i like the story. i like how Lennie loves mice, i think it makes him happy. sort of like a six year old girl and a doll. George keeps saying he would go on his own and it would be better in the beginning of the book, i think that shows just how difficult it was back in the 1930's. the story made me cry. haha. :]
Andrea Santoyo Period 3
Well, i'm about half way into the book. And I really like. Although it kind of seems to start off slow, you know? like LOTF, how all the action didn't come 'till about chapter 5 I think. However i'm not finished with the book, hopefully it gets better. I've read some of the comments and how Chelsea cried, and I just think that a book is always a good book when it can get some emotion out of somebody.
Alright, well im off to finish reading. I will be back soon with more thoughts.

well this just about ridiculous i have been trying to post a comment the past hour. im about halfway and the book is very descriptive. i dont think that george will let lennie leave and i dont think george is using him to get jobs. lennnie is a hard worker but george is staying with him because he actully cares about him alot and they have been with each other for a long time.
im half way through the book and its really boring hopefully it gets better as it goes on
raymond
i agree with denise i dont like what happen to lennie. Also i dont think geroge likes lennie because of the way he treats lennie, but also i think he does because of how it said that he saved him from his last job.
so who is done with the book..??
what do you guys think about it..??
Denise fofiu per 5

I finished the book, i thought it was a really good book, but i wish it was longer, i was dissapointed to find out that it was so short.
what about you, What do you think?
hey Denise! i wish it was longer too! but i really like the scene when Lennie like killed that guys hand. i felt bad cause he didn't know what was going on and he doesn't know why Curly hates him. its not fair.
i know it has a ton of descriptions but its worth it!
-to denise f-
i really like it this is the second time i read it
it is a really good book
the ending is sad&&it always make me want 2 cry
but i do wish it was longer to
hey chelsea i agree with you my favorite part is when lennie kills curlys hand
he deserved it
lennie never did anything to him he just wants 2 look tough
denise
about your question before
i think the last sentence means that slim&&george look kinda down&&curly&&carlson dont see why they were upset
that just my opinion
kathryn per.3
it is so messed up that curly did that to lennie. i think curly deserved to get his hand crushed. i like that slim told curly not to tell. it seems like lennie might have another friend.
do you think that candy decided to go with george and lennie when they leave because his dog died?
i dont think that candy wants to go with Lennie and George just cause his dog died. i think that he is happy to see two guys stick together and Candy wants that too.
yea i agree with you he seems pretty excited about it. you can really tell when he is explaining it to crooks.what do you think about cruly's wife?
Denise fofiu per 5
-----to chelsea----
Yeah i totally agree with you, i didn't like him ever sence the book mentioned him, i got really happy when i was reading that part. I think that Lennie put him in the right place.

------to superman----
This book was really good, i think i'll read it again sometime. Yeah the ending was really sad, i wish he didn't have to do that to Lennie.
Denise fofiu per 5
---to superman---
Yeah, maybe that could be.
the book was ok it got better at the end.i think the end was sad.but its good that george killed lennie instead of curly.
i dont understand if they are going to get the house or not.
to Denise =]
i kind of dsagree with you about what happened to Curly's wife. i don't think that she deserved to die just because she was trying to make friends with someone. and she is talking to all those men because that's all there is, i bet if there was another woman in there then she would go be friends with her but there isn't that's why she is talking to all of the guys to test out and find who is her friend. i don't blame her for wanting to have someone else to talk to since her husband is to controling and hse doesn't even like him anymore. but that's just me, if you have disagree with me write me back or something =] oh and i'm sorry if this message sounds kind of mean i didn't want it to or mean it if it did
yeah i agree with you daniel. i do think it was a good idea that George was the one who killed Lennie instead of Curly. he probly would of kept shouting him with his shotgun until the barrel ran out.
Miguel.s from period 5
to Denise
i think that if George left Lennie, he would not survive because nobody would look after Lennie. Nobody would look after Lennie because nobody would expect him to need help because of his size. Most people would think that he would be able to look after himself.
Geovanni Hernandez per. 3
Why do you guys think George decided to kill Lennie instead of letting Curly kill Lennie?
i think the way George killed Lennie is why he did it. he killed Lennie while he was telling him his favorite thing. the one thing besides mice that made Lennie happy was hearing about the little house and bunnies. how do you feel about the ending?
Andrea Santoyo Period 3.
To Geo24 and Chelsea:
Well I agree with what Chelsea said. It was probably the best way for him to die by telling him all the things that made him happy, especially when he didnt mean any harm. And as for George killing him, it could of reminds me how Candy was sad about them killing the dog that he had had for so long, and regretting not being able o do it himself. George was the one that knew what was best for Lennie, so I think he wanted to be the one to kill him.
Over all I think this was a very good book. I got a little tear at the end, and I've said it before, a book is always good when it gets some sort of emotion out of you.
(-:
Okay good job going into the last day of break YUCK! I am glad most of you have come to the end and are discussing how George dealt with Lennie. Really take that back to the question of whether or not George cared about Lennie in the first place. Also, comparing the last scene to the scene where the dog is shot is great.

well i agree with chelisa and lila because i also beleive that he had to kill lennie because if somebody else killed him he would of felt some sort of remorse. George knew that it had to be him. He must of rembered the death of Candy's dog.

Haha no it doesnt sound mean,
i think that if she wanted to make friends she wouldn't have dressed like that.

I think that george killed him because he didn't want to let curly make him suffer, George shot him in the back of his neck so he wont feel anything. If Curly got a hold of him he would make him suffer.

Well I haven't been able to get on to post lately, but I finished the book. Its definitly one of my the best books I'v read. I don't think I could have ever predicted the ending, and I agree with Andrea on the reason George chose to shoot Lennie. I actually think George did Lennie a favor because he saved him from what Curly would have done to him which would have probably been much worse.

i agree with andrea when she said that it reminds her of how candy felt when he felt guilty that someone else killed his dog and not him.
i totally agree with what driftking said about curley's wife.
when i was reading the part when she was telling lennie her secrets i was thinking that she maybe actully wants to just talk to someone but i also think that she was flriting around with the boys.

i fully agree with you. i didn't think about that when i was writing to you earlier, so in that sense she shouldn't dress the way she did.
I totaly agree with driftking abourt crueleys wife.

okay well i hate my computer i have to restart everything i wrote
if i was in Georges position i would rather kill my best friend myself than to have some one else do it
and thank you all for helping me understand everything but i still dont get the ending it just ended

i still think that george keeps lennie around because he cares about him.even though he doesnt act like it goerge has been around him for so long and he just got use to him. when crooks was talking to lennie he said that a guy could go nuts if he was alone but as long as he is with you he is fine. i think that is another reason why george kept lennie around.i think that george also feels bad for lennie and because he got use to him he didnt leave him behind like other people would do.
overall i think that the book was dry the first half and it was hard to keep reading. when i got to where the action started it was really good. the story made me sad at the end so the book is pretty good.

I really didn't get the part where Lennie's Aunt was speaking to Lennie and then the rabbit too.

i like how the ending just ended because that is how carlson and cruly felt. they didnt know what was wrong with george and slim. i think that it made them feel left out and confused on why george and slim would feel sad and when the story just ended it made the readers feel the same way. thats what i think the end is all about.

i think that lennie made all that up because he is scared an when peolpe feel emotions that are to strong they can do things they normally wouldnt do.and in lennies head he always thought about rabbits and his aunt gave him mice to pet but he killed them so i think that he made a connection to every thing that happen and just went over board.
