I find it very interessting that Frances controlling of Robert. Consedering that he's rich and usually expect the husband to be the controlling one.
I tink he can be eaisaly controlled because he has not experiansed the world yet because of that he thinks he has to listen to his wife.
plus he seems like a pansy
Raymond per.5
I think that lady bretts treatment to jake is a little unfair. Just because she still want to get around and not commit she blames Jake. (please correct me if im wrong this just came to me :])
plus i aslo agree with johnny he does seem like a pansy :)
Just a general post
This book is kind of hard to understand. I mean i get it but some parts I have to reread:(
johnny per.5
raymond is right some parts of the book i can't understand who is talking so i have to re-read it. but it is still a good book so far.
rachel p.3
I agree with Raymond. Lady Brett seems to pull Jake towards her, but then she suddenly pushes him away. Perhaps she just uses him when sh's lonley.
rachel p.3
With me I find the boook a tad bit confusing too. It just seems to jump from one thing to another. but as I read more I'm finding the book to be more interesting.
I think every book starts out slow and confusing but, you'll get used to it.
I agree with raymond about Brett. I think she justs wants to have someone that makes her feel loved without having to commit so she uses Jake to her convenience. The book is a bit difficult to comprehend because it doesn't really point out who is talking.
I was confused by the part where Robert was picturing his friends bedroom scenes. What was that all about?
Kelsey Per. 3
Ok so right now I'm having trouble understanding why Robert wants to leave Paris so much.?
Letty Tavares P.3
I'm almost halfway done with the book and even though I read it, I still don't understand that much of it. But what I do understand is that they get drunk a lot. They do eat alot out of the house.
(P.S. I also have to reread the book...)
Tavares P.3
Im sort of understanding it. What i Know is that they are at a hotel, which is suposably clean.
(I felt sorry for the raoch...what did it do to deserve the foot treatment?)
It is good to see some of you popping up on here. I do hope that the others who are not on yet, do so soon.
As to Hemingway's style, He does skip around in dialogue a lot, just concentrate on who is talking. He also has many characters who just come in for brief periods of time. He is trying to give you a real-life picture of what society is like. We drift into and out of each others' lives, often very quickly.
Raymond per.5
right now im in chapter VII
from what I understand Robert denied the offer to marry Frances..Right?? and yea wat else is going on?
That makes sense Mr.B. I understand why Hemingway would do this. Thanks Mr.B!
Rachel p.3
Now I sort of understand. my own mother had to explain some of it to me. now I understand why Lady Brett won't accept Jake's offers of getting back together. As for Robert denying Frances offer, I think he realized his independence from her if you will. So now he has nothing holding him back from going to South America.
Rachel p.3
For me I'm reading slower in this book than I do others. So I'm only just now starting book two. And I couldn't get on yesterday because the internet was down here in Arizona. I'm so far confused on exactly who the count is and why Lady Brett likes him so much. Is it just for his money?
Raymond per.5
I am barely starting book II also. I am confused on the love situation between Lady brett and the count, because i thought her and Jake were going to get together??
Raymond per.5
...Also at first i was getting confused alot but, as it got closer to book II and into book II it has gotten much eaiser to understand.
Well I am really behind.
I was on a camping trip since sunday.
and just got the book today.
I have read one chapter so far and all I can say is Cohn's wife "frances"
is hormonal!!
ha
I'm still not even on book two yet unfortunately. From what I've read it seems like Robert has no feelings for Frances and is just with her because of obligations.
Brett seems to have relationships with a lot of men. I think Jake is being hurt by this.
Bryan per. 5
I think that lady Brett is unsure about getting married so she tries to be around Jake so that she can be sure of getting married or not
Plus Jake falls for everything Brett does and I think Lady Brett knows this
before you started reading the book What did you think was the reason the book is seperated into 3 different books? Book 1, Book 2, Book 3
There is something specific that is hinted at...as far as a reason Brett and Jake cannot be together.
Yes, book 2 becomes less difficult to understand.
Keep the faith. You will all get through it.
Geese Robert Cohn is ridiculous and stalkerish. Does anyone know if Robert knows that Brett and Jake have a "thing" for each other?
Hey Mr.B, if Brett is madly in love with Jake then why is she so flirtacious with guys that aren't her fiance?
Well yeah I been doing some read is hard to understand but then i get it at the same time maybe i will understand it more when I almost finish with the book.At the being it start of with Robert and him being a boxing champion relates to me because my grandpa was a boxer and how it means a lot to robert as it means a lot to my dad.I am just saying
I think that Robert has a thing for Brett because in book 2 he stays behind to meet up with her instead of going with Jake and Bill
And it states that Brett met up with Robert on her own time. This could be foreshadowing something
tyler kapko per 5
I do not get why lady ashley(brett)
can not so her true affection for jacob? but so far the book is good
tyler kapko per 5
Johnny i agree but i also think that he thinks she is the only women that will like him.
tyler kapko per 5
the one thing i can say besides the book is good is hard to understand cause of the french. so i might have a little problem understanding it
Paola Morales P.5
Okay so I totally understand why Brett doesn't want to be with Jake! It all makes sense and kelsey from P.3, I don't understand it much either so if you find out tell me where to find it =]
Paola Morales P.5
So does Brett have a huge crush on Pedro Romero?
Jennifer p.3
Well this book is definately confusing.
But I think Lady Brett is indecisive
about getting married.
so she is just always around jake.
so she sees her options, before she gets hitched.
Paola Morales P.5
Wow! Robert Cohn is ridiculously crazy, that's for sure. How could he go all crazy for a person whom he should know didn't love him! Wow, he hit a new level of "Jew" in this book
Kelsey per. 3
so i finished and have to say i wasn't entireley pleased with it.
i really have grown to like jake though. i feel bad about his "injury." :D also, i feel he understands the problems of the lost generation, but he is trapped within it.
per. 5
In book 2 the characters start to show how they feel about robert and they are not good felings
when this happens robert doesnt really show any emotion toward the other characters this shows that he is a person tha holds all of hs hate inside and doesn show it

I found the hemingway hero code...
- The Hemingway hero is a man whose concepts are shaped by his view of death, that in the face of death a man must perform certain acts and these acts often involve enjoying or taking the most he can from life.
- He will not talk about his concepts.
- He is a man of intense loyalty to a small group because he can’t accept abstract things.
- He does not talk too much. He expresses himself not in words, but in actions. The Hemingway man is not a thinker, he is a man of action. But his actions are based upon a concept of life.
per. 5
In the book hemingway starts his characters off with just a little info about them. he makes you guess wat they are like and then turns them into something different. Robert did not seem like the kind of guy that would explode an start to knock people out like he did. Hemingway gave robert a backbone towards the end of the book and robert then sticks up for himself. This shows that robert is not a pansy at this moment but then hemingway brings him back to his pansy stage (when he is crying on the bed like a baby)
I think brett is the kind of girl that can never settle down and get married because she is confused within herself, she doesnt exactly know what she wants so she hangs out around alot of guys so that she can figure out what she wants
I find it interesting that hemingway makes it where brett and jake cant be together as much as they might want to. they cant because it would ruin the relationship that both of them have
also the ending proves that brett is unsure of what she wants and will never be able to marry because she will always change her mind
rachel p.3
I'm no where near almost done! I'm in the middle of book two, almost to book 3 I think. so far i'm unsure of everything! one things for sure when Mr. B said there was drinking he wasn't kidding! But is there really a conflict in this book?
Rachel p.3
I'm not sure i'm going to finish the book in time! I know why Lady Brett isn't with Jake. But other than that I have no idea what else is going on! Other than of corse all the drinking.
Rachel p.3
I think Lady Brett is still in love with Jake until Pedro Romero came into the picture. Apparently, Lady Brett is the same type as Pedro. So, that's why she's so attracted to him.
Kelsey per. 3
Rachel i think you can finish the book :D because i didnt think i was going to, just keep going(:
& yes rachel i believe that there are several conflicts. one is between jake and brett. they are left to just be close friends when jake is injured in the war. because they know it can never be anything more.
Kelsey per. 3
MrB, i think i understand why jake and brett can't really be together. i wasn't that specific earlier. I think since jake is self-concious about being infertile, and then brett walks in with all these guys that are fertile and didn't take advantage of it. this is why they know they can never be more than close friends. is this right?
Bryan per. 5
can anybody answer this question
Does Mike still think that he is going to get married to Brett or did Brett tell him it was over?
Kelsey Per. 3
Mike still thinks hes getting married i think. i'm pretty sure.
but i have a question about Lady Brett. why does shes go after so many men? i mean does she enjoy getting around?
Bryan per. 5
why in the book cant they drink water or something why does it always have to be some sort of alcohol. are they all alcoholics?
I think Brett isnt sure if she has found the right guy to marry so she goes out and surveys her options she goes out with so many guys so that she can find what she is looking for but if you have finished the book you see that she will never be able to get married because she does not know what she wants exactly
Ok. Good job going into the last day of break YUCK!
Rachel: Conflict in the book is referred to in Johnny's Hero Code. (Great Job finding it Johnny...now get out!)
Everyone: I think it was Bryan that noted how you kind of have to guess about the characters at the beginning. Isn't this the way it is in real life? You learn about people as you go.
Regarding Brett and Jake. Jake's problem, is a "physical injury." He isn't infertile. They do love each other, but Brett requires an aspect of their relationship that she can't have, so she seeks it elsewhere.
Rachel p.3
Well, I finished the book. It was a sort of bittersweet ending. the fact that Jake and Brett can't seem to forget their almost fateful relationship is somewhat indearing.
Rachel p.3
I enjoyed the very descriptive scenery in the final chapter. that is one thing i enjoy about Hemingway's writing. but man i'm suprised all the characters survived this pearl harbor of alcoholic drinks though.
Rachel p.3
It is sad that Jake and Brett can't seem to keep a relationship. It seems the only thing important to a relationship, to them, is the sexual part. other than the fact that he undiniable loves her! Unfourtunatly, their relationship is revealed to have been merely a beautiful dream, a dream that is now slipping away forever.

Overall this book was some what confusing only because hemingway had random people talking at certain times and you wouldnt know who was saying what
I liked how hemingway went into great detail about the places the characters stayed at and visited
Also this book seemed like it would have a sequel because the way it ended
tyler kapko per 5
I liked the book but it probalby would have been easier if i knew french.
Also i had to go back and reread some parts cause it jumped around

thanks mr b for setting me up with this book it was really good hope next book read is as good as this one.
sorry mister b mom did not get book till wensday posted thirsday and was gone camoing till today
I find that Brett is extremely promiscuous. i believe it is because she is trying so hard to find something she will be satisfied with. No one guy gives her that filling in her heart, so she consistently goes searching for it.
When Ernest hemingway considered these people the Lost Generation, i understood what he was saying, but at the same time, Idk, I think there are those sort of people(out of place, no purpose), in every generation. that is just how it is. People today, just like back then do try to find solitude and a way to escape reality by partying and drinking, so i do understand him there.
One of the things I was trying my hardest to understand is if Ernest Hemingway was what they call an "anti-semitic". I was reading some reviews online about people who actually thought that. I think it is because Robert Cohn is the one Jewish guy, you know, the "odd one out"( I don't mean that Jews are odd of course), i just mean that they kind of made him the number one person to verbally insult. He doesn't really fit in. They kind of alienated him, well, i think Ernest did. How come out of all the people, Ernest Hemingway only chose to tell Cohn's ethnicity/religion? What is Jake?Brett?Mike? Was it because there is a certain way he feels that he wanted us to know, and if it is what I think it is, he is wrong for doing so, even if he is a great writer. i apologize if this topic is a little racy, but I just wanted to get out. Maybe I am just reading into things.
Oh, sorry Mr. B, i am from Period#3
K'La Wymbs Period#3
It goes to show you that we learn over time to place our values with things that are going to only temporarily relieve us of facing reality. So instead of, "manning" up, we run away. not all of us, of course, but there are many who do. That's what some of this book is about:masculinity. Jake was suffering over his loss of manhood, and Brett was the confident, independent one:similar to a man. I don't believe she loved him because if she did, she would have been able to put aside his unfortunate impotency, and see him for what he really is. "That"thing", in no way measures your manhood, a real man is wise, does what is right(if he is wise), educates himself as much as possible, and places his priorities in the correct order. OH! Jake, Mike, and Cohn, really need to learn how to control themselves. They need to stop wasting time tasting all of those alcoholic drinks and get a taste of the real world. Yeah, sometimes things are going to be unfair in life, but...SOOOOOOOO.....Life wasn't promised to us to be fair. We have to make the most of every situation, and grow from them. So what if you don't have it going on sexually....I mean that is a major part of marriage, but that isn't the only part. For every situation, there is always hope, and for every bit of hope, comes a solution. GEEEEZZZZ Mr. B. All this thinking makes me want to write a book.
K'La wymbs Period#3
You are so right Mr. B about people coming in and out of our lives, sometimes on the daily, but i think that we carry a little bit of each person with us. That is why it is very important that we choose our friends wisely. They carry a heavy impact on our lives. Just look at all the people in this book for example, they all party, they all get get drunk, and look at them now, there not going anywhere. The people you hang around can either lift you up or bring you down, these people are just following a sad path. I think the person I pity the most is Lady Brett Ashley. She is going to search to the end of this world- top to bottom, east to west( I know, I know, you get the point)- looking for something that she probably won't find. She keeps on dreaming, especially at the end with Jake, see, he understands that if he went into a relationship with her, the relationship would be just like all her previous relationships. Too bad he still love her, huh?
