The Perks of Being a Wallflower Discussion

If you are reading Perks this is where you post. Remember to come on and comment at least three days over the break. Minimal effort will receive a minimal grade. Plan ahead and begin reading immediately as late posting will reduce your grade. Keep in mind that you will have a randomly selected essay when you return to school.

Leave specific, short comments discussing what is going on in the book. You may want to comment on how Charlie's character relates, or does not relate to you. Ask each other questions. Comment on each others' posts. Help each other understand what is going on in the story.

Example discussion question: 1. How much of an effect does Charlie's friend's suicide have on how Charlie turns out?

I didn't think the book was going to be that great i thought it would just be about a kid going through school seeing different things but it was so much more. It left me in tears and i think its the best book ive ever read.

I am still only on the first chapter..
But so far, I am loving this book. For some odd reason I just can't put it down... It is so realistic.

Emily Cutillo said...

The last comments I left said Chapter 1, my mistake, I meant Part 1. So far I can relate to Charlie in many ways...
When it says, " Because the song was great and we all really paid attention to it, five minutes of life truly spent, and we felt young in a good way." I know exactly what it meant.

Thi is book is impressing me every single page I turn.

Theodora Turner said...

Emily, i totally relate to that part .. And in that moment, I swear we were infinite. Its the best thing to feel and when it happens you know the peopleit happened with are your true friends. I also always think this..
"I walked over to the hill where we used to go and sled. There were a lot of little kids there. I watched them flying. Doing jumps and having races. And I thought that all those little kids are going to grow up someday. And all of those little kids are going to do the things that we do. And they will all kiss someone someday. But for now, sledding is enough. I think it would be great if sledding were always enough, but it isn't." This is so true and it worries me because kids will grow up and see different things and i wish i could just help them grow up and not see all the bAd things in the world but its impossible.
Anyone else relate to Charlie?

I went down to Borders in Victoria Gardens Saturday afternoon. Come Sunday morning I knew I had to start reading it, but I never expected that when I started I never wanted to stop.
I've read only up to page 91 so far. I love Charlie's perspective on everything. Looking back, I love page 70... when Charlie was telling Sam hes never been kissed before and she just wanted his first kiss to be by someone that loves him!
"And she kissed me. It was the kind of kiss that I could never tell my friend about out loud. It was the kind of kiss that made me know that I was never so happy in my whole life."..[charlie]
Its a great book and I really am glad Im reading it.

HannahBaileyC, i loved that kissing part too, its one of my favorite parts from the book! its soo cute!

I was surprised on Charlies music choice. [Page 61 & 62]
"But the second side is the one I like the most. It has winter kind of songs"
'Dear prudence & Blackbird by The Beatles' 'Dusk by Genesis (before Phil Collins was even in the band!) Landslide by Fleetwood Mac'
I could relate so much because I love Genesis & the Beatles & Fleetwood mac.
My mom grew me up on that kind of music:]

I AGREE WITH EVERYONE ELSE THIS BOOK IS LIKE NO OTHER. IT REALLY, REALISTIC, TO THE THINGS KIDS GO THROUGH IN LIFE AND (TO ME) THATS WHAT MAKES THIS BOOK SO INTERESTING IVE BEEN READING FOR THE PAST HOUR AND THE BOOK IS SO GREAT IT LEAVES ME SPEECHLESS AND I ALWAYS REREAD AGAIN. AND AGAIN WHEN CHARLIE STARTS OFF IN THE BEGINNING THAT HE HAS NO ONE TO TALK BUT JUST WRITES TO SOMEONE WHO WILL CARE WHEN THEY READ HIS LETTER .I CAN RELATE TO HIM. SOMETIMES I FEEL ALONE AT SCHOOL AND I HAVE NO ONE TO TALK TO I DONT KNOW WHY THERE ARE ALOT OF GREAT PEOPLE AT SCHOOL BUT I GUESS IM NOT AS OUTGOING ENOUGH AS I WAS IN JR. HIGH AND ELEMENTRY. HIGH SCHOOL IS ALOT TOUGHER, A DOG EAT DOG WORLD BUT YOU JUST GOTTA KEEP MOVING FORWARD AND STICK IT OUT AND HOPE FOR THE BEST AND IM SURE SOME PEOPLE AND IF NOT EVERYONE WILL AGREE WITH ME THAT MAKING NEW FRIENDS IS HARD. OVERALL, TO RAP THINGS UP THIS IS A OUTSTANDING BOOK AND IM VERY LUCKY TO HAVE COME ACROSS IT. THANKS MR. B!

I think the book is good but the kid smart and dumb. He gets good grades but has no knowledge about parties and drug life. When he gets to the party he eats brownies and they end up being special brownies and gets stoned. He needs to learn about other stuff besides school.

i can relate to this book alot too. i think that this is like real highschool, and its not the kina junk you read about where its a typical highschool and everything there is just so perfect. the drugs, the sex, and the personal problems are so real and thats what makes me interested in the book.

I completley agree with what you said, everything!!
Whenecer Charlie begins to ramble on and on, then he apologizes and says something like "I am sorry, i just rambled" or something... I relate to that so much...
I can't belive how much this book relates to our life as teenagers!

Is anyone else amazed at how much this book hits our life on the head???

Emily Cutillo said...

Okay, I just had to get back on because I reda a line in the book and it stopped me in my tracks, even though it is a small, simple line..

"But because things change. And frineds leave. And life doesn't stop for anybody."
Wow. I can relate to this line so so so much.. That is why when I read it I stopped in my tracks..

Can you guys? relate to this line?

Theodora Turner said...

Em i do relate to that and from all these comments most people relate its crazy ONe book is so universal! and good question MARCUS. i think being a wallflower is an observer, a flie on the wall, like they take in everything going on around them but don't always speak their minds even though they do have opinions about it all... i feel like i could do so much better at reaching out to these people because even like charlie, everyone needs a friend! im going to work on it. definately.

Just like pretty much everyone is saying, I too relate to the book. Charlie pin points everything that happens in high school and he makes it relateable to every group in high school. He created a message that not just one type of person could feel but all types. In a way he unified students and in a deeper sense he helped me to be a more understanding person and not just judge what meets the eye. also going back to one of theodora's comments about how kids are growing up into a depressing world and wanting to protect them from hurtful things. i totally can relate. I feel so bad when i see little kids living and playing like there wasnt a care in the world, and me,wishing that they could be spared the troubles of not only high school but the world. especially lately how our world is going, its not exactly picture perfect. its not fair how innocence cant stay forever and so many have that hard transition from swings and playgrounds to the pressure of drugs and sex.

Emily Cutillo said...

Taylor, I totally agre with everything you said..

QUESTION....
When Patirck kissed Charlie, why didn't Charlie get weirded out?
Was it because Patrick is one of his closest friends? I am not sure..

So far so good you guys. I am really happy that so many of you are really jumping on this discussion and taking it deeper.

A quote for you that caught my to the extent that it has been on my Myspace page since I read it, "Maybe these are my glory days and I'm not even realizing because they don't involve a ball."
With so much emphasis placed on sports in our society, it is very easy for those of us who aren't involved to accidentally live vicariously through the sports success of others.

I AGREE WITH EMILY WHY DIDNT CHARLIE GET WEIRED OUT WITH THAT KISS WITH PATRICK IT REALLY CONFUSES ME TO. OR IS IT JUST LIKE WHAT EM SAID HE WAS HIS CLOSEST FRIEND? I JUST FINISHED READING THE BOOK WOW WHAT AN ENDING AWESOME AND I FELT REALLY GOOD WHEN SAM ACTUALLY ENDED UP LIKING CHARLIE THAN LIKE SHE DID NINE MONTHS AGO, AND LIKE WE TALKED ABOUT IN CANDIDE WITH MR BOSTOCK "EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS" I JUST FELT REALLY HAPPEN FOR THE BOTH OF THEM
BUT OVERALL TWO THUMBS UP IM GOING TO REREAD IT AGAIN TOMARROW.
AND GOING BACK TO WHAT MR B SAID IS ACTUALLY TRUE. DOES GLORY DAYS ALWAYS HAVE TO REFER TO SPORTS? IT IS CRAZY HOW SPORTS HAVE AN IMPACT ON PEOPLE LIVES AND THE WAY THEY LIVE.

deanna10 said...

okay so i was happy that sam finaly kissed charlie... i was kinda hoping that she would, but i know that they cant be together... i just thought it was cute. i am really liking this book cuz theres always something new going on in his life and its really interesting..

i totally agree with taylor. this world today that we live in every one is being pressured into doing something bad like drugs and sex. we see other teens hanging out with friends or just being alone and we comment about them in our heads becuase we see that they dont have it hard but in reality we dont know that like myself and few other poeple that i know of.
back to marcus i think to myself what a wallflower is when basically you dont really have no one to talk to and hang you you basically fall into this group that you dont try to fit in but you already fit in.

i have a question why was brad so afraid of letting other people know that him and patrick have a relationship?

WHY DO U THINK MICHAEL KILLED HIMSELF???

I DON'T LIKE THE GIRL SUSAN JUST BECUZ SHE GETS A LITTLE MORE PRETTIER SHE DOESNT WANT TO BE SEEN BY HER OTHER FRIENDS AND DOESNT WANT HER FRIENDS TO KNOW HOW SMART SHE REALLY IS.

THE WHOLE MICHAEL SITUATION REALLY WAS SAD I COULDNT EVE IMAGINE LOSING A FREIND LIKE THAT...

QUESTION!!!!
WHY DO U GUYS THINK CHARLIE MISSED HIS BROTHER SO MUCH WHEN HE SAW HIM PLAYING FOOTBALL ON THE TV

MrB said...

Marcus: No there isn't another book. They are making a movie though.

Manny(everyone else too): At the beginning of the book Charlie enters high school. Really think back to how people changed going from Jr Hi to Hi.

taylortang said...

Emily...
i also had the same question about why charlie let patrick kiss him...and why he didn't seem that weirded out by it. I think it is a mix between like you said being a good friend and also like Sam said at the end about him not really being there..[pg 200- 201]. His first priority was being a good friend even though by allwoing the kiss, he wasn't. Also, just like sam said Patrick needed someone to be honest with him, but all charlie did was allow the kiss to happen and that truly wasnt being the good friend pat needed at the moment. so basically i think charlie allowed the kisses because he never thought about himself...plus this action contributed to the story in itself and emphasizing how charlie was really a wallflower.

NEw Subject...:
while i was reading I always felt a depressing mood throughout the story...even when good things happened those parts were bittersweet...anyone else have the same mood...or different?

taylortang said...

jessie, i think that brad is so afraid of telling people about his "secret" relationship because if he did his social status would either go down the drain or take a whole new turn. I think everyone can agree when i say, most people dont like change; it scares them. if brad were to all of a sudden come out...he would be looked at differently no matter what anyone says. that is a huge and jolting transition form the big bad jock to the boyfriend of patrick. yes some may accept it but he is too coward to face those who wont, including his father.

QUESTION
1.)DO U THINK ITS MEST UP WAT BRAD IS DOING TO PATRICK???

2.)DO U THINK PATRICK SHOUULD HAVE EVER MEST WITH BRAD IN THE FIRST PLACE???

Emily Cutillo said...

Taylor, I completley know what you are talking about with the depressing mood throuhgout the entire story, even when something good happens. It is bizzare.

MANNY- I think that Patrick did not know what he was getting into in the first place "messing" with Brad.. So I don't think that it would have mattered..
And to one of your previous questions about why did Charlie's sister like him more when he hit her?
Well I think her logic was she was telling him to stand up and be a man, so when he finally did it, she was shocked that he stood up to her and I don't think she wanted to get him more mad because who knows what he would have done!!

dawkin20 said...

I did get a couple of good laughs though.

Emily Cutillo said...

Manny, that is very true about being the star quarterback and being popular and that would not look good to people.. I undertsnad where you are coming from and I agree with you, but I think Patrick and Brad were in the moment time and time again...
I also think that Patrick should have realized that Brad's reputation means a lot so they could not be an openly-gay couple... Do you agree?

Okay so I finished the book completely!
It really does relate soo much to teenagers these days, in my opinion.
Emily, I have a question for you and anyone else who would like to answer..
~Look back onto page 177 when Charlie had finished The Fountainhead..
"There was this one part where the main character, who is this architect, is sitting on a boat with his best friend, who is a newspaper tycoon. And the newspaper tycoon says that the architect is a very cold man. The architect replies that if the boat were sinking, and there was only room in the lifeboat for one person, he would gladly give up his life for the newspaper tycoon. And then he says something like this... "I would die for you. But I won't live for you.""

~What is your translation for the phrase "I would die for you. But I wont live for you." ?
..anyone?

I interpreted this to be: that you would be willing to give your life up for someone, but you wouldnt live your life just for them.
?
-Hannah

Emily Cutillo said...

Eddie... I don't understand that poem.. But what I got out of it was the kid was depressed and finally just gave up...
Hannah, I agree with your translation about beung able to die for someone, but to not live your life for them..

Can anyone explain why Charlie had to go to the hospital at the end of the book? I don't understand why.. Thanks.

dawkin20 said...

Who do you think wrote the poem charlie read to the people at the party?

Jshizzle said...

Jameelah Per. 3

It's probably supposed to be an anonymous poem that he found at a library or one of his teachers gave him.

But it does seem like a likely suicide note, which he may have received indirectly from his friend who killed himself. Micheal i think it is.

Emily Cutillo said...

What do you guys think about Sam's mixed signals towards Charlie?

Jshizzle said...

I think she's trying to hint him to go after what he wants.

This is made clear in the ending but i think we're supposed to discuss that in a couple of days.

Emily Cutillo said...

It is made clear at the end.. But Sam confused Charlie which I didn't think is right.. Charlie can't read minds... I don't think it was right how Sam wanted him to figure it out to end up liking her even when she said not to...

HannahBaileyC said...

EMILY..
I got confused too at the end of the book with how Charlie ended up in the hospital again.
I think he just had a relapse, and it may had just hit him that his friends are all moving on with their lives and he had to still continue with high school. Also the fact that he loved Sam so much and she was leaving. Im not too sure. I wish that they would make a "The Perks of Being A Wallflower #2" Dont you agree Emily?
I have a question.. Who gave Charlie the poem from Michael?.. how did it get out because I always thought that the parents had it, and didnt want anyone to see it??...Thankyou!!

~Happy Thanksgiving everyone!~

HannahBaileyC said...

I was thinking about why I love this book and yes it does relate to the real life of teenagers. I think though that I loved it so much was because it just felt so personal. Personal about him & personal towards me. I like how its in a diary format and its just like hes telling us about his life. He makes it interesting without making up fragments. Nor does he sugar coat it. He just tells you how he feels it and sees it. I like that in a book. I found this book easy to concentrate on.

Does anyone feel the same?..or anything to add?

Emily Cutillo said...

Hannah, I think there are some things in this book that we just will never find out.. And I ma fine with that.. The mystery makes the book 10x more amazing! Don't you agree? I agree with you Hnnah about the hospital at the end, that sounds like a reasonable explanation..

I completley agree with you on the book.. I love how similar it is to our life, and this may sound weird, but throughout the book, I kept on thinking that Charlie was writing me the letters so that is why it felt so personal.. It also was very personal becasue he gave us every detail of his life! I also like how he said he chaged the names so we couldn't find out who he was, I think that made it so cool!

Emily Cutillo said...

I was also thinking about the part in the book where Charlie felt so alone, he had no frineds, and he missed he Aunt Helen so much..
When I read that part, I felt so close to Charlie.. I bet we all have had those moments where we need that one person we were so close with because we are so lonley.. It was a little bit hard fro me to read that part because when yoo go through that, you really never want to see someone go through it.

HannahBaileyC said...

Emily...
I agree with you 100%
The mystery was just amazing.

I know what you mean when you say you felt like he was writing you letters. I loved how he would ask questions and be like, well I hope your day is good! or Im sorry for using a swear but I didnt know how else to put it. I though those little parts were great. I loved how you said that it felt like they were letters to you. I think in a way that that is what kept me reading.. I thought to myself..I have to read Charlie's letters. I almost felt like it was my responsiblity to read them because he was counting on me..

Thumbelina! said...

Emily:you said something about mixed signals that Sam sent to Charlie...and i do think that they were mixed...but i think the reasons for them is a question of Sam's maturity and the way she thinks she should see Charlie...

Emily Cutillo said...

Hannah, I am so gald that we are on the same track right now! I knw what you mean when you say it was like he was counting on you.. that is how we know that we got very into the book! I think that the end of the book was very powerful I love how it ended with this: "So, if this does end up being my last letter, please believe that things are good with me, and even when they're not, they will be soon enough. And I will believe the same about you."

Do you agree that that was the perfect ending to this amazing novel??

HannahBaileyC said...

Oh Emily darling..
I do. I realy do. That was just such a perfect ending! "And I believe the same about you." Wow.
Do you remember the begining of the book.. page 2?
"I am writing to you because she said you listen and understand and didn't try to sleep with that person at the party even though you could have. Please don't try to figure out who she is, because then you might figure out who I am, and I reallt don't want you to do that."
What did you think about that being the very begining of a novel??
I loved it. I seriously caught myself thinking wow who is this girl. Which actually didn't really matter because there was no girl. I still loved it though. I loved how he would repeat throughout the book things he said in the begining, and then at the end. I remember him saying something to the fact of "please believe that things are good with me, and even when they're not, they will be soon enough" somewhere else in the book. Did you tell how his writing technique kind of changed as the book went on? I feel as if it did. At more towards the end of the book his writing seemed more mature and correct.

I was looking back in the book and I found the page where Charlie put, "I think he's a senior. The kids started calling him Patty when his real name is Patrick. And "Nothing" told these kids, "Listen, you either call me Patrick, or you call me nothing.." Then I went to the part when Charlie first talks to Patrck and Sam and now doesn't think as Patrick as "Nothing".
We got to see thier realationship develop and I find that amazing.

Thumbelina...In regards to your question about the relationship Charlie forms with Patrick and Sam and it being beneficial or not..I would have to say that even though they introduced him to a lot of bad things high school can bring to many of its students, it was overall a beneficial relationship. Without them, he would be lonely and have nothing to look forward to. They gave him life. Yes there were the moments where they let him do bad things to his body but I honestly do not think he would have ever felt any real emotions besides maybe being confused. Sam gave him love, Patrick gave him compassion, Mary Elizabeth gave him confidence...etc.

Jshizzle said...

I know I'm going to catch a lot of criticism for this but I really did not like this book at all.

I was going to wait for someone else to say it but it looks like everyone believe its just a great piece of work.
I have to disagree for the following reasons:

I don't think the book was organized or written well.
I understand it's supposed to be from a teenage perspective. However, most of us have decent grammatical and language skills.
Bill said that Charlie was advanced or whatever, so why did he right like a slightly retarded 5th grader? He had many run on sentences at the beginning and ending of the novel. His vocabulary was also very limited.
This i found very irritating and hard at times to comprehend the story.

The author seems as he had a checklist of controversial teenage issues to just throw into the book and call it a masterpiece. It seemed like this list included rape, drug and alcohol abuse, suicide, depression, social life, sexual orientation and encounters, abortion, and I'm sure I missed a couple.

Never did he go into depth of any of these specific issues.(With the exception of depression... Seeing how Charlie cried every couple of pages.) Perhaps he threw them all into one story and expected the readers to relate to one issue or another.

At the beginning it brings up the rape situation. Charlie asks if the girl is raped, and the subject never comes up again. This happened with the other issues I listed before.

Many people can sympathize with Charlie. At the ending of the book I wondered if he suffered from some type of mild retardation or autism. He was very naive and simple all throughout the story and
was always confused about every single matter. This is a part of growing up, to a certain extent.

I simply believe the author completely lacked creativity and originality. All he did was make a very concise story including stereotypical teenagers (Cool gay friend, dreamy girl, pot head/dealer who minds his own, sister who talks mess about all the other females, brother who plays football, housewife mother, works all day father...) and slap in the issues I mentioned earlier.

HannahBaileyC said...

Taylor,
I know exactly what you mean!!
The ending was nice but yes it was sad. I felt so bad for Charlie when he had a relapse.

Theodora Turner said...

hannah... you were kinda confused about the "relapse" and i thought ans i was pretty sure, and taylor totally agreed when we talked about it outside the blog, that his aunt raped or melested him. he loved her so much because people that do terrible things like that tell the victims they do it because they love them and he was so young so he didnt know any better. but the symptoms he had throughout the book and why he couldnt continue being intimate with sam are things people experience when they are raped or melested... anyone think the same thing??
and the poem hit me like a ton of bricks. i could see the transition in the plot of the poem and i can see it in our world. people change over time and effects can be devastating for some unfortunately.

this is to jshizzle
At first it does seem like he is wrtting with a lot of grammer mistakes in the the story but he also says he is working on that will he is reading these books. Like you said about the whole book is about the stereotypical teenager, but the book is supposed to catch the eye of most teens. So maybe the book isn't like all highschool teen lives but its catching the majority of them. I can agree with your point on how the author just threw in a bunch of teen related drama in the book to make it more interesting. But i look at it as him trying have possibly relate to another teen that is reading it. Which to me explains all the very dramatic issues of rape, drug and alcohol abuse, suicide, depression, sexual orientation, and abortion in this book. Just look at it as how many high school girls now you see at school pregnant. How many kids do you see now smoking, drinking, and doing drugs. I bet u see a lot of it going on thats what the book has life of a kid in high school and what he does at school and whats going on at home.

dawkin20 said...

Question
What was your reaction when Charlies Sister said she was pregnant?

Jshizzle said...

I wasn't shocked or anything. She was obviously a sexually active girl and things happen like that a lot. She thought her boyfriend honestly loved and cared about her. Females sometimes mistake that, and believe that having sex will share the emotion although a lot of the time it's false. I mean the book is realistic, but I can't bring myself to become emotionally attached to it because everything seems so normal and expected to me.

Yes, I know people personally that have experienced things mentioned all throughout the book. To me, it doesn't draw me to the book because you should be very aware of all these topics unless you are completely sheltered.

To sum up what i think about Sam's baby:

Mama's baby, papa's maybe.

Jshizzle said...

Also a lot of people are like "This book can like totally relate to the modern teenager! I so love it I cried so much!"

This is nothing new at all.
Teenagers have experienced all of these things ever since they existed.
Major fail.

Jshizzle said...

i don't agree either, but i could understand there conclusion.
Ill just wait they respond with you.

HannahBaileyC said...

Theodora and Taylor,
Explain how you came up with the idea that Aunt Helen molested Charlie?
..Because you and I were not hit by the same ton of bricks. Emily and I have conversed online and offline also, and we both dont agree.

???

He had a deep profound love for his Aunt and his Aunt loved him.
Charlie would go to his aunt for advice all the time. Every Christmas/Birthday Charlie would get depressed because thats when Helen died. [To get his 2nd present] Charlie was tormented with guilt of thinking it was his fault. I doubt that he would get that depressed about her every year if she did such a horrible thing..

HannahBaileyC said...

Theodora,
Are you confused on who got molested? Dont you mean that Aunt Helen got molested by an un-named family friend. Charlie didnt get molested. I know that Aunt Helen was an unhappy person most of her life and had many problems with 'men and boys' but Charlie says how he loved Aunt Helen and how he hates the word molested because of what happened to Aunt Helen. He says how his Mom and him would go to the grave of hers and talk.. talk about nice things about her. I dont think Charlie would be able to stand sitting there saying nice things about her if she raped/molested him. Are you confusing Aunt Helens compassion for child molestation?..because she was the only one who would hug him and made him feel alive he said. Charlie would repeat in the book how he would wish she was there to talk about the problems with Sam and Mary-Elizabeth. All he wanted was for her to be alive again. He was depressed on how maybe if Aunt Helen just bought 1 present she would still be alive.. if he was born on a diferent day that didnt snow, she would still be alive! Thats what Charlie has been thinking all this time. The first time Charlie drove alone without his Mother in the car or anyone else, he drove to her grave. I just think that Aunt Helen and him had a very special bond, not meaning sexualy though. Yes, Charlie was just very emotiomal. Things tugged on his heart strings. So with his Aunt Helen passed-on, and with him having to deal with his bestfriend Michael who commited suicide this poor kid Charlies life just felt so lonely most likely. They were both his world and they were both gone now. I just strongly think that he wasnt molested or raped, im sorry, but I dont. I just cant find a page that leads to Charlie being molested or raped. Can you please tell me why you and Taylor would think such a thing?

Emily Cutillo said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
taylortang said...

Hannah and Emily,
to back up theodora, yes I completely agree with her about charlie being raped. like she said, he showed the symptoms of a raped victim, he was afraid at the end being sexually active with sam, he always went to a psychologist, helen was the only one who "payed attention to him"and it DID hit me like a ton of bricks once theodora and i talked.. what really made me think that he was, was when charlie said (this quote was said right after charlie and sam almost did the inimate deed, "when i fell asleep, i had this dream. my brother and my sister and i were watching television with my aunt helen. everything was in slow motion...and what she was doing was what sam was doing."(pg 204) also this section, "aLl i remember is putting the letter into the mailbox. the next thing i knew,i was sitting in the doctors office. and i remebered my aunt helen. and i started to cry. and the doctor, who turned out to be a very nice woman, started asking me questions. which i answered.
I dont really want to talk about the questions and the answers.but i kind of figured out that everything i dreamnt about my aunt helen was true. and after a while, i realized that it happened every Satrday when we would watch television.(his parents were gone saturdays)...the hardest part was sitting in the doctors office when the doctor told my mom and dad what had happened. i have never seen my mother cry so much.or my father look so angry."page 208- 209 so in my opinion its written out in black and white.

Jshizzle said...

Well I'm convinced. You're very observant Taylor. It's just hard to believe.

Theodora Turner said...

hannah and emily: taylor pretty much explained everything i was thinking when i was reading your comments and i am strongly sure he was because of those quotes and that really is what people go through. they do not even remember what happened but he explained he was even surprised..i don't see how you don't see it. why else would he be a "pervert" like his sister called him or the "wierdo"? he was a victim and people didnt understand him and people that go through the traumatizing things act like this..also, he felt guilty about her death and felt so close to him because its as if she hypnotized him by telling him he was special and she loved him so she could do all those things witohut him thinking it was bad and telling his parents.a lot of times we hear of victims passing along the deed and i believe that aunt helen fits this description. and i don't have the book anymore but there is a quote where he says for the first time he was seeing it too..like that.
THUMBELINA the ending was a shock and thats why i was so so emotional about the book.if you read the comments exchanged about the end between emily hannah taylor and i you'll see why i was emotional and it'd be cool if EVERYONE could jump in on this discussion....please do...

I had a question previously about why did Charlie go to the hospital at the end of the story and no one answered it until now.... So things really do come togther at the end.. I just read Part 3 and I thought it was very wrong for Charlie to kiss Sam like that. He should've kissed Mary Elizabeth instead, but I guess he got a little excited and wasn't thinking, so I shouldn't be so quick to judge. Any way, When does Charlie get raped, in the fourth part? or was that when Mary Elizabeth made him put his hand up her shirt and bra?

HannahBaileyC said...

The perks of being a wallflower, written like letters to the readers. Charlie is a wallflower and his friends help him. He comes of age and is tormented with the struggels of his hidden secrets. Charlie has a hidden crush on Sam, and the lose of his Aunt Helen, and his best friend to suicide haunts him throughout the book. Charlies first worries were starting high school, then making new friends. You might say there is a little Charlie in a lot of us. Charlie second guesses his emotions and his emotional state of mind. He is his own worst enemy, and life was not kind to him. He reached out to what kept him safe. Charlie was very smart, you might even say he was a genius who cries all the time. Charlie is the wallflower because he hears things and observes things. Dealing with love, sex, drugs, molestation, and falling in love with someone he knew he could never have. He uncovers his supressed memory that changes his life. His brother off to college and his sister who thinks he's a freak, we have all experienced a sibling or school mate that has at one time or another thought we were a freak as well. So to judge Charlies quirkiness go much deeper then understanding where Charlie is coming from, and whre he is going. Yes one could say that he was Molested by his Aunt Helen, on the other hand it could have been sugested thought idea planted there by his psychiatrist when Charlie would talk so highly of his Aunt Helen. Perhaps the many nights he and his Aunt spent watching T.V at night and Saturday night live together, and Charlie remembering the way his Aunt touched him was the same way Sam touched him. Aunt Helens touches could have been misenterpeted by Charlie do to his confused life and the sugested idea from his psychiatrist. Reality might have not been a strong point of his surpressed memory, due to his nervouse breakdown and 2 month stay in the hospital. Although there are subtle hints that Charlies psychiatrist had an idea he was molested by his Aunt Helen due to his reacurring dreams, and the attention his favorite Aunt and person in the whole world gave him. We can maybe say that in many cases a doctor in psychiatrics could also have planted the idea during treatment Charlie had with him. That maybe Charlie indeed was molested by his Aunt Helen due to the closeness they had, someone he loved and always will love, it did not matter to him. A surpressed memory can be made to believe what ever you want it to believe. In many case's a doctor or family member can make you over time believe anything, it's how you look at the situation? And the hints do leave us to believe that his Aunt could have touched him inapropriately due to his remembering the touches being the way he felt Sam touched him. I feel it leaves it open for all with an open mind to wonder what was really the facts. With the Aunt dead and not being able to hear what the Aunt might have had to say about it will always haunt me. Charlie would be about 32 years old now and thats a long time to surpress and recall what really happened to him in his dark state of mind.
My favorite line in the book was the last paragraph and it said: So,if this does end up being my last letter, please believe that things are good with me, and even when they're not, they will be soon enough. And I will believe the same about you. I felt like cring because he is telling all of us that things can be okay. What sort of life do you think Charlie is living now? Charlie put others happiness before his. Perhaps there is a deeper understanding to what we have read and hopefully took with us from Charlies letters. Maybe our minds are open to think, and rethink what really could have happened to Charlie. one might really never know, it's how you look at things, and how he really remembered things. I hope this book touched you as much as it did me. I hope it opened your minds to think that maybe things were not quite the way it looks or reads. I guess we may never know.

I was kind of glad what happened at end of part 3 because it will make the book more interesting. But at the same time it would suck to be in his shoes.

HannahBaileyC said...

Thank you Rebecca,

Reading this book is, and was an experience I will not forget. You see when Sam kissed Charlie, and before she kissed him, she asked if he had ever been kissed by a girl before. Charlie shook his head no, not even when he was little he said. I can't imagine growing up as a child and never knowing a kiss, a good comforting kiss, one that a Mother or Father gives just because they love you. In many ways Charlies lack of knowing the right kind of love just followed him into a life of seeking out someone that could understand him. I feel close to Charlie, and sorry for him at the same time. Charlie not knowing a kiss only tells us that he opened up to Sam enough to tell her how he felt. We have a better understanding that his Aunt must have never kissed him as well. I still have a hard time thinking that his Aunt molested him. How far the Aunt went is the big question. Charlie is not that clear about it in his secret memories. If Charlie was molested by the Aunt then he never let it get to him. Charlie experimenting with life and wanting to fit in somewhere only added to confusion he must have felt. The Kiss between Patrick and Charlie was something you would expect to have happened. The fact that Patrick had been up for so long feeling philosophical, wired on coffee and truck stop drugs, and where there emotions were heading was not unexpected. I am sure Charlie did not want to shame Patrick, Charlie was a boy who aimed to please everyone else then himeself. I have compassion for Charlie we have all been in a place where a little Charlie is in all of us. We just almost would do anything to fit in and find our place. We all know these kids in this book, and the letters Charlie has allowed us to read. They are just different names for the same kids we know and want to fit in with, in and out of school. I am sure we can name what class mates fit the profile of the kids in this book. Yet we seam to not be as affected by them as we are when we read the very personal letters to us from Charlie, why is it. This book has givin me a better understanding to what impacks our lives, and how serious it is to feel so lost and effected by those around us. I think Charlies English teacher Bill was a smart teacher who could see Charlie needed special attention. Maybe because like all of us, if we open our eyes we can see the pain in our firends who are just trying to hard to find themselves, or fit in. I also see a deeper message here in this book. Charlie music and his choice of mixed taped songs make you take notice of what he might have felt at the time. Charlies forever telling us the latest book he has read or movie he has watched. I get it, I so get it, it makes you want to read what Charlie is reading. In many ways he is an inspiration to us I hope, and inpires us to want to seek out what he is reading. The choice of movies and books that Charlies English teacher had Charlie read and watch, reminds me of how Emily's Mom and my Mom is with us. Our Moms want us to experience what they did in there youth. I could see that this was a part of something Charlies Teacher could share with him in a positive way. I am more then ever convinced that Charlie will be fine, this is why he sent us these strong letters to learn from as he did in his life experience.I have to believe he will be fine, he has a lot to offer us in the way he reached us through his letters.

hannah i get what you are saying but what kind of aunt or any family member would touch their family member like that and at his very young age could that not be considered molestation or rape?especially since he is young AND vulnerable....?

I consider that molestation, like you said, he was young and vunerable and people can use that to their advantage, as Aunt Helen did to Charlie.. He also trusted, respected and loved Aunt Helen, so I think that is also is a part in why it hit Charlie so hard.

some thign else that struck me bout Charlie was that he was such an amazing thinker...but he would think about the small things before the big ones...but then he also thought about how when you look in the mirror and say your name and how unreal it feels...

which i had a love-hate thing for...because he was sometimes so clueless but yet so intelligent....

wow i just finished and that would have to be one of the most amazing books i have ever read. its sad how charlie had to go through his first year with so many problems, its weird how he was so smart and didn't know it. i honestly think it wasn't something he cared about because he was too worried about the small things and how the important people in his life felt.

I really enjoyed the all of the book, but I was kind of sad when Charle was in the hospital for about two months. Good thing he had a lot of support with him.

Theodora, Let me clear this up with you and everyone. I don't think Charlie was raped, yet the book never spells it out that he claims his Aunt Hellen molested him. Charlie makes it clear to all of us in his letters to us that his only love he felt was from his Aunt Helen and that he only remembers feeling that way with his Aunt After his experience with Sam...Do you remember when he stated that it really never went that far with Sam? And he told Sam that he had never been kissed as a young boy, this would lead you to believe that his Aunt never kissed him. So this is why I feel that with how he compared his momories of his Aunt Helen and her closeness to him, that perhaps the PSYCHIATRIST could have planted the idea in his head during treatment. Charlie made it clear that his Aunt was the only one to have touched him in the way Sam did. What kind of touch did the Aunt do to him, and how far did it go, as well as how often is not clear and he made you feel that his Aunt had touched him maybe once. YES! this could be interpeted that Charlie was molested by his Aunt Helen. Lets have an open mind here, the psychiatrist stated that he hinted that maybe Charlies Aunt had Molested him? How clear it is will always be a MYSTERY to me. I am not saying the Aunt never Molested Charlie, I am saying that he was not raped. Charlie makes it clear that his relationship with Sam was nothing more then his fantacy of loving her and it was compared to the Aunt, and how she made him feel. Your not the first one to have thought that Charlie was quirky, nervous, and full of anxiety along with depression. Charlie's problems were never started because of his Aunt. It was because what affected Charlie was his outlook on his family, and maybe things might have seamed like his family was screwed up like anyones family could appear to look if you were to read about it. It's just Charlie was within himself his own worst enemy, and felt as if he were a wallflower. If you feel so low about yourself it can play tricks on you with how you handle life.
So to say Teddy, that it was you who felt he was molested, or raped is an under statement. Charlie leaves a lot for us to take from his letters, like Charlie states in his final letter to us is he will be okay, and he will believe we will be okay as well.

I thought this was one of the best books I have read. I had a perfect ending but didn't understand why he was in the hospital.
