i think that george keeps lenny around so that no one can mess with him. he may have brains but lenny has the muscle.
i agree with johnny.
George things its nice to have him around cause then the people who hires him looks at them like a team. so that gives them a plus for people to hire them.
also a question to ask...
Is lennys obsession with rabbits and mice related in some way
Actually i think George has Lenny because of his strength. They benefit from one another although lenny may not comprehend that concept. Lenny's strength attracts working opportunities and George's logic keeps them from being taken advantage of.
Marilyn c from 3rd period
dylan well i think lenny is obbessed with mice rabits and etc cause he likes the feelings of soft fur !
marilyn
dylan from period 5
haha yes people do attend to like things that are soft but i was more going along the lines of may be that mice is motivation to having rabbits, which is the one thing he truely wants. And the only way we will get that is if he 'lives off the land'
Emily Period 5-
I haven't gotten that far in the book, but as of right now it seems as if George keeps Lennie around because he is big and George is small.. My opinion may change as I go on in the book..
But I feel bad for Lennie..
Marilyn c 3rd period
dylan well it has to do with that but later on if you keep on reading you will see a conflict in which lennie is involved just because of he's obbession for soft materials

well i think that george and lennie's relationship is like a father and son relationship because george is always watching out for lennie and lennie does what george tells him
I do think that George geuninley cares about Lennie..
He doesn't let Lennie go when he says he'll go because he knows that Lennie would be screwed on his own..

i think lenny likes soft stuff because he always has to work "hard" to get buy. he is so used to life being rough that i think he just wants to stop and enjoy the "soft" stuff.
Michelle Garcia P.5 Chpt 1 & 2
I just finished those two chapters (I know late but...) and at first it seemed boring but the second chapter really got me. The two barely get there and Curly is already picking a fight with them. I'm itching to know who is going to be in the major conflict!
i think that the reason george keeps lennie around is because he is strong. I think that when they go to look for a job if Lennie stays quit and they see how hard he works they might have a bigger chance of gettting the job.
i think that lennie is slow and he doesnt know how to take care of himself. i think thats why george sticks around and helps him.
I really am curious to why Curley has a problem with Lennie..
Curley gets on my nerves.
Dennys per. 3
i agree with marilyn. lenny is obsessed with soft furs ex. rabbits and mice. that alone as the book goes on creates some problems and conflict in the book for him.
i think in a sense george is just using lenny for protection but hes starting to care for him a little as the book goes.
curley is an idiot. i dont like him. he starts a lot of problems.
by some problems already occuring in the book. how do you think lenny and george will end up as the book goes on???
another quick question. why does curley have problems with lenny? what has lenny done?
dennys per.3
i disagree with deanna10. i dont think that lenny is slow or stupid i just think that he needs a little bit of help with some stuff and he maybe needs a friend and george is their for that but george also uses him for protection. at least in my opinion
Marilyn C 3rd period
to dennys ,well i do not know why curly doesnt like lennie but i think that he is just a hater and is jealous !
i will comment later just wanted to show i have access to the blogger.

i think it is sad how lenny is slow but i dont think its a matter of stupidity. he just needs a little help. and i dont think george keeps lenny around to mess with him. george and lenny have a strong brotherly relationship and george really does love lenny.
It really bothered me when Crooks scared Lennie by saying "What would you do if George didn't come back tonight?"
Did that bother anyone else?

First post.
So, I have been really enjoying this book. The way the discussions are written bother me, because it's like improper.
So far my only question is with curly. WHAT IS HIS PROBLEM.
Lenny seems like almost a small child. Like he does need someone there to protect him and take care of him for lots of things. Trying to remember things seems to be very difficult for him and I wonder if there is maybe a deeper story to that.
As for George I sort of feel that he keeps Leent around to feel that sort of over protection he needs to be needed kind of thing.
I'm getting really into this book. I'll post more later.
i am kind of getting in to this book, at first it was really boring and now i am anxious to know what will happen between lennie, curly, and his wife.
the only thing i dont like about the book is the language they use, it really gets on my nerves because i cant understand some of the stuff they say..
I think that george is a worthless person
even though lennie is not that smart, without lennie george wouldnt be able to do anything or get any work what so ever
I think curly has a problem with big people because he was probally picked on as a kid. Now that he can fight back as an adult he takes every chance he gets to fight.
i think the mouse represents lennie's childhood
as people we tend to hold on to things we have been given or taught such as memories
so the mouse was something that meant alot to lennie and probably reminds him of his aunt
Marilync 3rd p
to bryan well i think that the mouse represents more george cause he is small and has a boney nose just like a mouse !and in the begining of the book it describes it and how lennie is more like a bear !as to physically thats what i think!
the mouse isn't really symbolic, it's more of a foreshadowing thing.
And for others who dislike curly because he's basically a jerk, let us remember that this takes place in a period when people were not as... sympathetic to personal issues. In a place where grown men are struggling for labor i would imagine it's not unusual for him to not have pity for Lenny because he is mentally retarded. He has more of a "Oh well, that's life, we all have our problems." attitude.
and again, whoever said George is worthless needs to reconsider that. Who is this true when he is the only reason Lenny is not broke, in jail or dead. Ok yes, lenny is strong, but once and employer realized he had no logic skills they would completely screw him over on his pay. George would be able to survive and possibly work his way up to a higher status, while lenny would barely stay alive.
dennys per.3
to loren,
i think your wrong in saying that lenny is slow. i just think he needs some help with some specific things, but i do agree that its not a matter of stupidity i just think he needs a friend and george is their to be that friend. george and lenny are starting to grow this really good friendship between them.
to emily,
that did bother me a little. just to think that george might have a unfortunate event and end up getting hurt by someone or various people. you never know what could happen to lennys good friend george.
To Jshizzle-
I am on the fence about what you said about Curley...
I understand about the time this book takes place, but I do not think that Curley should have been such a jerk to Lennie.
It isn't right to be a jerk to someone when that person has given you no reason to be rude to them.
Bryan Simon-
Can you explain to me why you think George is a worthless person?
I don't quite understand what you meant in that comment.
Well hello guys! Good work so far. Keep it up. Jameelah has some very good points in her post, though many of you do. Keep going with it. I'll pop back in soon to check on you. Keep fighting it out...that is what analysis is!
Dylan period 5
okay to all people asking what curly has against lenny.
curly has what some people call small-man-syndrome (i dont know how to spell it. while the first describe curly, Steinbeck refered to curley as "short". so since he is short curly tries his hardest to be tough in front of big people or in general in front of eveyone. And what sparked this is that lenny laughed at soemthing curly said.
Okay Emily, again, these are grown men who all have their personal issues in addition to a worldwide depression. Yes, being young females in a more economically stable and less "direct" setting, it would seem mean and rude for this to be happening and we would have a little grudge with that person picking fights.
You see how George and the other men handle the situation. "Lenny, we have bigger things to worry about. Like you causing more trouble... if curly wants to catch your fade, (excuse me) fight with you when he hits you first let him have it."
As a reader we must put ourselves in perspective of the situation to comprehend the story.

ok well in the barn scene where lenny is holding the dead puppy and curlys wife comes in. i think it is sad how lenny kills her but she kinda deserved it. she always showed herself to be a flirt and a manipulator, but in the end they started to focus on her loneliness. and in reality her dream of being a movie star was like georges and lennys fantasy of the farm.
I just finished the book.
It was amazing! I cannot believe it!
I feel very bad for Candy because on the scene where he is with Curley's wife in the barn and she is lying there dead, he says something along the lines of how she ruined things for him, how he could have been washing the dishes for Lennie and George on their own land..I also was about to scry when George had to kill Lennie.
Jshizzle-
I personally do not think that being a "young female" has anything to do with my opinion of Curley being rude.
After finishing the book, I now see how George is a good person. How he took care of Lennie and sacrificed parts of his own life just to take care of him.
I also feel very bad for Lennie.
He is so big, with all of this power, not konwing how to control his anger.. And it is horrible that he can hurt someone with barley touching them..
At first i thought George was keeeping Lennie around so he would have someone to out for him. But i i fill now he uses him so he will do most of the work and maybe take his money.
i agree with jshizzle on how George and Lennie work out as a group but still think George is using him.
I dislike Curly and how he picks his fights and fills he needs to show off.
i think tthat the reason lenny likes mice so much is because it reminds him of rabbits and when they can george keeps on saying that they will have a nice farm and they will have rabbits and lenny will be able to take care of them.
well i think that lenny thinks like a little kid and he does anything that you tell him to do cause he doesnt know better !
when he does bad things he really does not mean to do it !
This book is great! 100x better than the book I read last break for this class.
Ok, Lennie IS mentally retarded. Whoever wants to call me mean and say that he just needs help...no.
It is what it is , Lennie is retarded. George helped Lennie every moment they were together, even during his death.
It was just like candy and his dog. They were together for a long time, but the dog became an inconvenience. A dog is useless with no teeth and nearly blind. At first lennie was killing small animals, (accidents of course), but when he became an inconvenience to everyone else by killing humans, he had to be killed.
Although the book ended with two deaths, it was a great novel that indirectly told a story of a friendship that lasted until death.
(I lol'd at whoever said curley's wife deserved to be killed because she's a tease. That's like saying lennie deserved to be killed because he was retarded. and even if flirts did deserve to to die, that would eliminate a huge portion of the American female population...)
Letty Period 3
I don't get why Curley's Wife the Tart married Curley if she doesn't like him? Why not divorce him and marries someone she likes? Could it be that she likes to feed off of other peoples suffering and see them get into trouble?
Letty Period 3
When Carlson details how to kill the dog, it seems to foreshadow what George is going to do to Lenny.

To:JShizzle.
I 100% completely agree with you on this novel.
Lenny was much like the relationship between Candy and his dog, staying around until he too became a problem. From the begginning the author foreshadowed the outcome of the Leenie's life through the mice that he did kill. I think I might go back and read some parts though, I'm still kind of confused on somethings.
But all in all I enjoyed this book very much.
I didn't really think I would enjoy this book, but in the end I did..
When it got to the part when Geroge kills Lennie, I konw that George must have been so sad that he had to kill his companion that has been along side him for so long, but I bet that George was glad that HE was the one to end Lennie's life, rather than Curley, who in revenge of Lennie accidentally killing his wife, would have killed him in a worse way than the way Geroge killed him, quick.
Jshizzle-
I like the way you put your last comment, I agree with you!
this book realy made me sad. it was depressing how lenny had to die in the end. even though he died by his long life friend it was still sad. overall i liked this book, and the outcome to the book was very precictable.

Good question.
I think Curleys Wife thought she could have everything she has ever dreamed of if she married Curley.
Michelle Garcia P.5
Chapters 3&4
I think Curly's wife had it coming to her once she allowed Lennie to touch her hair. Beacuse of the series of events that had happened I don't think that George, Lennie, and Candy won't have their own plot of land after all. And it made me sad when Crooks wanted to get in on it but George didn't approve.
dennys per.3
i agree with mishelle, i think curlys wife is stupid. she shouldnt have let lennie touch her.
dennys per.3
in conclusion, for me the ending sucked! i dont think lennie should have died. i think lennie should have stayed around for the whole book. i also think its worst that george killed him even if it was for his own good! you never want your "best friend" to be the one to kill you
letty p.3
geaogeseems to keep Lennie around for company and alsofor protection. It also seems that Lennie will mostly listen to geaoge.

I felt sorry for lennie that he doesn't understand why the dog and the mice are easy for him to kill without meaning to.I wonder how would it feel to understand the world the way lennie sees it. . .

it was very sad that lenny had to die but it must have been really hard for george to shoot him like that. he kinda didnt even have time to say goodbye.

I just finished the book and overall it was really good. i couldn't believe George actually took Lennnies life. I think it finally got to George he can't enjoy life because of him. even though Lennie never knows what he did was wrong and he can't get away with murder.
letty P3
I wonder how hard it was for george to come to the conclusion to shoot lennie?

I felt sorry for lennie because all he wanted to do was tend the rabbits and what he got was a bullet to the head.

Chapters 5&6
Wow... the ending was really sad. I can't believe George killed Lennie. That was ultimate friend betrayal. It was sad to see someone so oblivious to so many things have to be the one to die just because of the way he is.
i think crook likes to mess with lennie because he was picked on as a child and therefore tries to get back at white people
emily
i said george is worthless because he has to rely on lennie to get them work even though he has the brains i still feel he is just using lennie
the heron represents george and the water snakes represent lennie because the water snakes get an unexpected death while the heron knows what it is doing the whole time
i also believe that george thought that killing lennie was the only way he would be able to clear his name because the mob would end up blaming him as well for the killing since him and lennie were supposedly best friends
i dont think george thought things through good enough because lennie and him could of ran away or thought of another plan to escape and get far away from that ranch
i dont think he needed to kill him
Lenny obviously did some damage before for them to run away and continues to do more damage. Therefore there lives would have been a circle if they would have ran away. Not that it was a good for lenny to die but George had to do what was best for himself.
Either way, they were gonna kill Lenny horribly. In Georges mind, this was the peaceful way for Lenny to die while thinking of tending rabbits.
