The Perks of Being a Wallflower Discussion PERIOD 3

If you are reading Perks this is where you post. Remember to come on and comment at least three days over the break. Minimal effort will receive a minimal grade. Plan ahead and begin reading immediately as late posting will reduce your grade. Keep in mind that you will have a randomly selected essay when you return to school.

Leave specific, short comments discussing what is going on in the book. You may want to comment on how Charlie's character relates, or does not relate to you. Ask each other questions. Comment on each others' posts. Help each other understand what is going on in the story.

Example discussion question: 1. How much of an effect does Charlie's friend's suicide have on how Charlie turns out?

So far in the book, Charlie has ssuprised me. With his friend's suicide it really made him wonder why his friend did it. Entering high school was sort os the same way for me as it was foe Charlie. But not entirely. Just a tad. Charlie's descriptive masturbation was a bit too much info! At least for me! And about how often he does it is quite too much sharing for his part. That's how far i've gotten so far in the book and I look forward to the rest! :)

i kinda agree with rachel. i dont think his friend should have commited suicide. also, the masturbation part, kinda shocked me with information. all i could say is that he is a cochino.(means "sick" child in spanish). the book is ok up to this point but i dont think im getting the main point so far.

I think the main point of the book so far is just Charlie's whole experinces in high school. Also kind of him coming into his own, ecspecially with his two new friends, Sam and Patrick. While reading about his very first party, I found it funny when Charlie ate the brownie and got stoned. You should never eat a pastery at parties! Ecspecially brownies!:)

This book started off with a pretty crazy scenario. A suicide? I wouldn't know how it feels because pretty much all my friends now go by ''live life to its fullest'' so suicide is probably the last thing on their minds. It's pretty awkward reading some of this stuff because it's stuff you hear about and it's going into detail. So I'm like wow, I can't believe this is a book.

.jR said...

Oh yeah and the pot brownies part was pretty funny. Ah, good ol' pot brownies. I haven't had those in a while. =)

I agree with Jesse, some of this stuff does go into pretty descriptive details. Ecspecially the event at the party Charlie say when he was younger. That's pretty scaring to a little kid. Seeing someone being raped. That's when the many details started churning my stomach. That stuff was a little more than i needed to know! That still was sad for that girl, being taken advatage like that.

Even with the very descriptive parties, it really seems that Charlie is coming into his own. I mean he has some nice friends, Sam and Patrick. Finding out about Patrick and Brad was again a little more than i needed to know! Just them having secret affairs was enough for me. I didn't need Partrick to go into detail on what they did. That should've remained private, for my taste. I don't care that they got together, but that's all i needed to know! I think it's ambitious of Charlie wanting to be a writer. Ireally think he could do it!:)

again, charlie has seen some stuff in his younger days. but so far, to me, it looks like he has forgotten all about the suicide. thats my opinion. maybe someone else thinks differently but he goes to a party, eats a pot brownie and then this discussion about what he saw as a child.

Anonymous said...

Also, is it just me, or is this guy like a counselor? He observes things and not tell anybody at that moment and the whole Patrick and Brad thing. He has too much stuff happening around him right now, but will he have to keep secrets and eventually let them all down by telling everybody? I dont know but its either that im looking at the situation the wrong way or what?

sweetrachel said...

Rachel p.3

I think you're looking at it the wrong way. Charlie is Patrick's friend, and i think that the secrets he knows are no different from regular little secrets that you would exchange with one of your friends. I believe Charlie won't tell, i don't think that is his nature or personality. And the secrets won't overwhelm him cause their not that huge.

sweetrachel said...

Rachel p.3

With the whole suicide, I agree with Chris. I think Charlie has forgotten about it, but while reading i find Charlie remembering the good days with Micheal and not about his suicide. So now he merly is just reminicing his company and not the terrible tragedy. Plus Charlie now has Sam and Patrick, and he's happier.:)

Anonymous said...

you got a point, but when Charlie begins to remember about the suicide, don't you think that the whole pressure about keeping the secrets will be too much. Also, what if Patrick some how does something that goes opposite of what Charlie thinks of him. I don't know but to me something is going to happen between charlie and Patrick.

sweetrachel said...

Rachel p.3

I do agree. Considering it's high school, and lord knows that means drama! But i'm sencerely hoping nothing like that will happen. Charlie has such a good friendship with patrick and i'd hate to see something come between that. With the suicide i don't think that will overwhelm him. Cause it's in the past, and i don't think it's coming back if you will. And what do the secrets have to do with the suicide? They have nothing to do with it. Are you sure your not looking at this the wrong way?:)

Anonymous said...

im not saying that the secrets had anything to do with the suicide. but in my opinion, i think that the thought of the suicide will eventually come back to Charlie and that will somehow change Patrick and Charlie's friendship. im foreshadowing here. maybe it'll happen maybe not, but thats what im thinking.

Ok, ok calm down Chris! After what i've just read, I see what you're saying. Now Charlie is remembering all the deaths. Both the suicide and his Aunt Helen's death. It is causing him to go to his sad place deep down. With the poem that Micheal made a copy for him, and reading it, i think that was micheal's suicide letter in a way. And with Sam and Patrick, them both focusing on Craig and Brad, Charlie is starting to feel left out. Kind of like a third wheel feeling.

Reading about Aunt Helen was truly sad. How close Charlie was to her, And after she died, His what i think was a depression state, Was awful. It made me remember my own personal tregedy. I too lost a relative that i was close too, that made me go through a depression state, not as badly though, trust me. I'm really enjoying this book! It really seems to speak to me you know? And it is soo relatible. Which i think is totally awesome!:)

no, no, no. i aint mad, rachel. does it look like i am.

sorry about the personal tragedy. but me, im not really into this book. too much death in Charlie's life. the way this books is going i think that one of his friends will eventually die, or someone really close to him.

i have never read a book with that kind of format but i love it. i love that charlie says everything so straight forward and when he was describing the sexual scenes and the masturbation i couldn't help but to crack up because he just says it totally comfortable and serious. i also like that he understands everything that happens, like when he caught patrick and brad in the closet he was totally calm even though he was high but he understood when he got sober.i am at part 3 and so far part 1 is my favorite. part 3 gets depressing but i found out about his family and why he cries so much, i still love the book though.

Unknown said...

i meant that part 2 gets depressing. anyway i hope that in part 3 he doesnt get real sad to where he has to see a doctor but i will find out.

sweetrachel said...

Rachel p.3

No, no You don't sonud angry Chris. You just sounded straight forward. And I was just messing around!:)

Thanks, But it was back in 2001, It was my grandfather. And i've recovered.:) Now the book seems to be depressing. So many things are happening to Charlie. I feel he thinks way too much! Some thing could be eating him up inside. I'm still enjoying the book though. I agree with kathryn, When describing the sex and masturbation scenes, he was suprisingly Comfortable with it! Which did make me laugh too.:) I'm at part 3 now.

Anonymous said...

i dont know how he does it, but somehow he is able to make it look like he is just cool and calm when he described the sex and masturbation. i dont no how he could do that and still have many things in his head.

Charlie seems to be very naive for his age. Though he has seen a lot of things it still seems like he is younger than he is.

Very good so far. Rachel and Chris I enjoyed the "battle". Keep it up guys. I know Chalie talks about some uncomfortable things, but try to look past it to bigger issues. Keep going!

sweetrachel said...

While reading those pages with the sex and masturbation, my face both got disgusted and laughed at some of the stuff. Just because the way he worded it.:) But last night i read to part 4, I sure do hope that it all turns out ok for Charlie! My brother keeps reassuring me that it does, cause he's read it before, i'd sure like to see it!:)

I was truly surprised how this book stared out so great. And Charlie was doing so great, with one little mistake, Charlie's life spun out of control! But i figured that's a book for yah! When's the resolution coming? :)

I know, I noticed Mr. B spelled Charlie, Chaile. I'm mow half way through part 4. And i'm glad that Charlie has reconciled with his friends. And the fact that patrick kissed Charlie, leaves me wondering how's this story going to turn out? But perhaps it was just a one time thing. Now ther's gradutation and prom. The school years ending for them. Like it is for us. Ironic huh?:)

Wow! So far this novel is quite interesting. I agree with Rachel, Charlie was a little TOO discriptive about the masturbation.
He wittnessed many sexual activities in the first part of the novel! I think i would be like traumatized!....overall Charlie seems sort of innocent in wierd way....I think he cries a litte too much about the most dumbest things...but thats just Charlie....i wonder why he's so sensitive...well i have to keep reading to find out! :)

Unknown said...

It did get depressing but when charlie reunited with his friends i got excited and now i am at the end of part 4. i keep wishing that sam will kiss charlie again but only if she likes him not because she is leaveing. i do beleive that he loves her and i think she likes him even if she is to old for him.anyway im off to finish part 4.

Unknown said...

I finished the book last night and it is one of my favorite books.im happy that sam and charlie kissed and what not, i knew that she liked him. i also like that sam is so honest with charlie and i think that she is right that he never does what he wants and he isnt always there all the time. it sucks that charlie was in the hospital for so long but im glad that he got through it and he seems alot happier.anyways it was a very good book.

sweetrachel said...

I finished the book! I'm so happy that Charlie and Sam kissed! I agree with Kathryn. I loved this book. But i do have one question, What exactly happened to charlie to make him be in the hospital? I didn't quite understand why or how. Let me know!:)

Anonymous said...

that was unexpected, for me. it was on ok book but i think that it would have been better if what i have been predicting would have happened. but im not the writer. took a while to finish this book but i did it. too bad it took up most of my break. Thanks mr bostock.

It was a decent book. Apparently this book was really good but I thought otherwise. To me, a good book has to have sports involved. It has to talk of a struggling athlete and how he overcomes in one glorious moment.
But this book wasn't too bad. It made me realize that there are interesting books out there.

Lo93 said...

To Chelsea-
I noticed the same thing about him crying a LOT!
It makes me wonder what happened in his past to make him so sensitive.

I got the book really late. At this point dad has no money and no library has it. So far Charlie just seems really emo. I agree with everyone the masturbation part was a little to much info. Haha. Going in my freshman year i wasn't emo, but i have to admit that if my best friend were to kill her self it would effect me in big ways also. Also i've never been into the drugs and stuff so i can't relate to that. That's as far as i've gone. :(
