The Perks of Being a Wallflower discussion PERIOD 5

If you are reading Perks this is where you post. Remember to come on and comment at least three days over the break. Minimal effort will receive a minimal grade. Plan ahead and begin reading immediately as late posting will reduce your grade. Keep in mind that you will have a randomly selected essay when you return to school.

Leave specific, short comments discussing what is going on in the book. You may want to comment on how Charlie's character relates, or does not relate to you. Ask each other questions. Comment on each others' posts. Help each other understand what is going on in the story.

Example discussion question: 1. How much of an effect does Charlie's friend's suicide have on how Charlie turns out?

wow,i just finished reading part 1 of the book. So far the book is really good, i just had one question, what does it mean when they said, "he's a wallflower"? On page 37..near the bottom of the page.

denise f said...

The effect of Charlie'c friend's suicide has a huge impact on Charlie and the people around him.
Everyone around him felt so bad for him that they raised his grades to A's and they acted differently to him. Charlie didnt understand why didnt his friend come and talk to him about his "problems at home", I think that charlie thought that he could've saved his friends life if he talked to him.

Okay well i really like the book im so into it but i am just wondering who is Charlie actually sendind all the letters to?

Hey were did you guys get the book. They don't have it at the Mall.

denise f said...

---To Rina---
Well i think that he's just writing it to his notebook...in a sort of way like acting that his notebook is a person..or he's just hoping that someone will come across his notebook one day and read it.

raul11 said...

I agree with denise. I think he is writing sort of like a diary. I think he writes it in letter form so that he feels he has someone to talk to, and tell personal things to.

raul11 said...

Miguel, you might have to go down the hill to find it.

Wow, I truly enjoyed reading this book. I am now starting part 4 and I am amazed at all the things this boy has gone through. He has evolved to his his school life. Although he is a wallflower, he is still friends with seniors and he is a freshman, That's impressive.
I does seem like he is writting in some sort of diary, but in one of the parts, he talks about going to the post office.

BriannaBaugh said...

I also agree with Denise's 2nd comment. Charlie has gone through the suicide of his friend, yet he is still on top of everything else. Also, is the girl Charlie experinces sexual things with, his age? or older?

Rina said...

-->Maryna<-- well thank everyone i get it now... and ithink that his friends suicide had a lot of affect on charlie, in many differnt ways

Well I just finished reading part 1, and i think its a really good book and im really into it. I also didnt understand when they said that Charlie was a "wallflower."

to Alix & denise

A wallflower is someone who would show up at a dance but stay out of everything and like lean against the wall.

i think they call him a wallflower because he shows up in life but he stays out of everything thats going on.

Mabey he acts this way because of all the problems he has been having to deal with latly.mabey he wants nothing to do with anything because he feels that he dosnt deserv to.

but thats all my guess lol.

denise f said...

----To Mr.Whitney----
Thanks...that makes sence because in the book he always talks about participating in parties and dances.

denise f said...

This book is really good..i find it to be weird how i can relate to some of the things that he feels.

BriannaBaugh said...

I find this book very interesting.
It's funny how in the begining he says he won't go into detail or give out names, because he doesn't want the reader to figure out who is he, but he ends up doing tha throughout the book.

BriannaBaugh said...

Also, I think it's great how Charlie doesn't tell anyone about Patrick and Brad. I don't understand his relationship with Sam. She says that Charlie shouldn't like her, but then she sort of in a way wants to be "more" then friends with him. Help?

Rina said...

-->maryna<--
---> to Brianna<---
well i think charlie and sam relationship is difficult because charlie has fantasys about her but sam doesnt fell the same way.

denise f said...

----to Brianna-----
I think that Charlie does stick to his word, because i think that he changed everybodies names and the locations. I dont know but thats what i thnk.

DriftKing said...

Where can I find this book?? btw its amazing so far!

BriannaBaugh said...

----DriftKing---
You should already have the book.

BriannaBaugh said...

This book was amzing. I really enjoyed how Charlie has changed and overcome obstacles troughout the book. I agree Charlie does have an old relationship with Sam. Sam also says in the book that he wasn't a real friend to other people in the book, because he lied to them. For emaple, Patrick when he let him kiss Charlie.

So I just finished reading {part 2}.. I really like how the author tells the stories because i can imagine it all happeneing.. The one thing that i didnt get on part 2 was the whole thing about the STARS??? i dont know if it didnt make sense cause he was drunk but i still didnt get it..

Chelsea :] said...

i think the stories charlie writes are to us as readers. like the author wanted to write to everyone who decided to read.

Anonymous said...

i just finished reading part one last night and so far its pretty interesting to read. I think charlie is a really innocent boy and I feel kind of bad that he had to see compromising positions his sister and other people were in.

Anonymous said...

i can kind of relate to charlie because he thinks a lot about the future and his family and i do the same because i feel like no one would understand why i think the way i do.

Anonymous said...

i feel like he is trying to become like father in a way that he would be known as a great person and would be recognized when he is older.

denise f said...

This book was really well writen. When i started to first read it i didnt want to stop, and now im done with the book and amazed of how smart this boy is. I think its sad when he would talk about his aunt helen, and the things that happen to him when he would think too much and too fast.

denise f said...

I think im a bit dissapointed with the ending though, i thought that he would give me a better ending or maybe i just wanted a longer book i dont know, but still think he should have ended it better.

Anonymous said...

This book is very interesting.
I enjoy reading about Charlie, he is very smart and loves to talk to his friend.

Anonymous said...

I just finished reading part 3 in the book and i think that Charlie has to go through so much with his family and friends. That he just doesnt know what to do anymore. So many people now can relate to him because alot of people have many things going on in their lives.

Anonymous said...

why is charlie somewhat distant from his siblings? it doesn't seem like he spends a lot of time with them.

Anonymous said...

Oh wow. Charlie is so different compared to his siblings. I believe this can be a typical story but in this case it is a lot better.

Anonymous said...

So Charlie is in love with Sam and from what i'm reading, she has a crush on him but she does not say much. But good book so far

denise f said...

---TO GAMEFREAK2704----
I think that he is distant to his sibalings because he's so different from them, he probably thinks that they wouldnt understand him. Charlie also says that he was really close to his aunt helen until she died.
Then again people's families are all different, ive had friends that are distant from their sibalings, but in my family im really close to everyone, so i guess it depends

denise f said...

---TO PAOLA LALA23--
Your right with sam and charlie, they both like each other but...i would tell you more but then i would spoil somewhat of the ending for you, so i'll let you find out.

PARTIALLY TO DRIFT KING. AND TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO TALK

ok soo i dont really knwo what to say. im reading the book and so far it seems like a story about a boy goes to highschool and deals with normal problems. except for the hole friend killing him self thing. Oh ya , this is random but doses anyone els think its supper dupper funny that charlie kick that bullys but !

well if anyone wants to have a little discushion tell me cuz right now im just writing stuff because i dont want to have to do a major works lol

Chelsea :] said...

ive read to about the third part and i love the book so far. Charlie is so observant and i love that about him. Charlie puts so much detail in every letter and he seems to mean everything. the author did a great job writing this book. i love how charlie is so innocent. i feel like im learning how life works with charlie.

MrB said...

I think you guys are doing great so far. Keep it up! Thank you Mr. Whitney for clearing up the "wallflower" issue, you are correct. Keep digging in! Just try to get away from my original question and on to your own.

Anonymous said...

To Denise F...
Yeah I finished it last night and it was like a slap in the face! But thank you, and wow. I didn't really expect the ending with the Aunt.

Anonymous said...

To Tim Whitney,
Nice, yes I also think it is funny how he beats up Sean. Charlie is a little nerd who can stand up to anybody. :)

Anonymous said...

Haha okay, I finished the book and my total rating was a 9/10. I love how Charlie is so quiet and he knows how to be a trust worthy person. So I think I know who he is writing to but I'm not 100% sure. Will someone do me the honor of explaining that section to me?

denise f said...

I think it crazy when Charlie stands up for Patrick, i dont think anyone knew that charlie had that in him and that he could do so much damage.

Anonymous said...

thanks for answering my question and why did sam kiss charlie? i wonder whta sam first kiss was like because she said that she wanted to forget that?

Rina said...

-->Maryna<--

DriftKing said...

DriftKing said...

i think charlie is always crying because he is VERY emotional and sensitive to things

DriftKing said...

i just finished part 3 and im in the middle of part 4 and i cant stop reading...i wouldnt mind buying this book

Rina said...

-->Maryna<--
okay so i finished the book this morning and i dont get the end why is he in the hospital..
i totally dont get it so is his aunt helen still alive?
this is so confusing
but over all this was a really good book

Anonymous said...

i just finished the book and its really good! the ending was kind of a surprise though. anyways its my favorite book now.

Rina said...

-->Maryna<--
okay so ive been researching about the book and charlie might have had autism in the begging and i guess at the end he rembers the molestation and he ends up in a mental institution...
well that what i found on a website about the book
man that sucks
i guess that when he was going to do the "dirty" with sam it reminded he what he's aunt helen did to him"molest him"
i get it now it all makes sense

raul11 said...

Wait, I thought it was his aunt Helen who got molested not him or did he?

Rina said...

-->maryna<--
i think it was charlie i researched it find out and they said charlie got molested

Anonymous said...

Hey Mr. B,
Okay I have a theory to whom Charlie writes too. I believe that Charlie has schizophrenia and thats the reason for his little attacks. Also he must have an alter-ego so he writes to his other self. Am I on track or am i just speaking nonsense?

DriftKing said...

---to raul---
i think i can be a wallflower to sometimes

your not alone

DriftKing said...

i finished the book earlier today and it is my favorite book so far cuz its the most resent book ive read ha

i said i was gonna buy it but nah i decided im not cuz i tried to read it again be4 i rturn it but i couldnt stand it

Chelsea :] said...

i finished the book a couple days a go but couldnt get online till now. the book was so good. the ending confused me a lot though,
but i love the presents he gave to Sam and Patrick. i really dont get the whole molested ending. it seemed like he got molested but in the end i dont understand why he loved his aunt so much throughout the whole book.
