Plan ahead and begin reading immediately as late posting will reduce your grade. Keep in mind that you will have a randomly selected essay when you return to school.
Leave specific, short comments discussing what is going on in the book. Ask each other questions. Comment on each others' posts. Help each other understand what is going on in the story.

Example discussion question: 1. What do you think of Lady Brett's treatment of Jake?

I haven't really gotten into the book but as far as i know Cohn keeps moving because he feels that it will help him escape his problems. Frances his second wife so far treats him well just a little too over protective. I don't see Cohn as someone that would leave his wife because she treated him fairly well but those other "nice" women must have gotten the better of him.

This book has an interesting plot. I wonder when the describing of the goring is going to come up?(Morbid, I know.)

olderbro7 said...

i think that the goring will come when the bull fights happen because it does say that the only way to live your life to the fullest is to be a bull fighter and they do want to go to Spain. It does leave a lot of room to actually think of what could happen.

Cohn is a stocker..if you havent finished the book im sure you'll develope ur own opinion about him..and ya the goring is in the bullfighting i won't say anything about it yet because I don't know where everyone is at. OLDERBRO7 everyone seems to run to different places to try to get away from their problems. Once you guys finish can you tell me the themes you have found? I cannot see any clearly and I just don't see the point in the book.

i hate the way this book is written but its beautifully written for pervets because everything is implied!

The characters are very gritty and very real but if i met them i would want to kill them.

because every character doesnt fight their demons they kind see how it plays out...and i dont know if this is related to the Lost Generation in some way but it was very similar to what we observed in our world history lessons.

What makes you think Cohn is a stalker Theodora? I think Cohn is just a loner

Anonymous said...

well i think it makes sense that Cohn had left Frances, for one Frances had come to be controlling and she was only a rebound; She was basically security for him.

Maybe that could develop into a theme? Companionship- like needing someone to make themselves feel better or just ways of avoiding it, the way Jack had found ways to "get of friends"...

I really like Robert Cohn, I think he's just like any person bored with their lives and wants some change. And Jake is like anyone too, who has accepted the fact he is bored and wont do anything about it. Reminds me of myself and my friends.

I don't see why running has to be the answer to there problems. I mean just wanting to leave all of a sudden why is it so important that he leaves? I don't think that those nice girls that he met we the best influence. The bull fights aren't really a favorite of mine but that is the "only way to live life to the fullest." I think that Cohn is confused about himself because he shouldn't be rebounding and then running off

Loverboy, he follows Brett around EVERYWHEWRE when they are in Spain and San Sebastian"He WAS there...Poor Devil...I hate him to."(182) while she has a fiance and when she went after Romero he beat him up very badly,"I say he did hurt Pedro Ramano, hehurt him most badly." and at the same time he beat up his friend Jake because he didn't know where Brett had gone and that was the truth."As i started to get on my feet he hit me twice. I went down backward under a table."(191) Later in the same chapter he expresses sorrow and admits he goes mad over her."I'm sorry Jake. Please forgive me...I was crazy. You must see how it was...I couldn't stand it about Brett."(194) Mike her fiance always asks why he follows her when he isn't wanted"I'm not clever. But i do know when I'm not wanted. Why don't you see when you're not wanted Cohn? Go away.Go away for God's sake.Take that sad Jewish face away. Don't you think I'm right?"(177) and Brett says he acts terribly..
Tay, maybe that is a theme..but so many of the friendships if not all dwindle the next day and i always thought a theme was a lesson so maybe the lesson or theme is you cannot ever depend on anyone to the fullest.

Oh, I see... I feel bad for the poor guy that got gored for no reason at all.

I have yet to finish the book but It is not one of my favorites so far. I am hoping it gets better as I go on ; I hope to finish very soon...also there are so many things going on that it confuses me sometimes. I do however like the time setting. How does everyone else like it?

Daniel said...

The book is really slow.Hopefully it gets better. But i think Cohn keeps moving because hes running from his problems.

This is a tough book for high school. It really requires you to have some life experience out on your own, though I think you guys are doing well so far. Don't be discouraged, and don't hate the characters too much. I assure you that they are very real. Rebecca, yes, LOST GENERATION very much at play here. Stay with it guys, I know it is hard.

Theodora, i get what you're saying, its like they only group together when "making fun" of others...all that stupid click stuff.

so what does everyone think about Brett? I'm partially ify on her.

And this book shows the bad side of people and it is very true that people arren't perfect..yet it seems like no one does anything good so far

Theodora Turner said...

Tay, the time settin is so different from ours its all centered around like drinking and eating out and driving around, it's interesting.Daniel i thought it was slow basically all the way through. It hasn't been a favorite of mine either.
I think Brett takes advantage of her good looks. When a guy is attracted to her she'll blow him off unless she's interested too..
Who do you guys think is the most innocent character?(like who causes the least trouble?)

Anonymous said...

yeah the time setting is different but the drinking party and sex focus hasnt changed much
Brett just seems like a common stereotype always getting what she wants at the time but not knowing what she wants in the long run and she's a complete tease
i'm not sure who the most innocent is yet though..
What does everyone think about micheals and cohns relationship?

taylortang said...

I agree with basically what everyone is saying about brett...she is a tease and she doesn't really care about people and their feelings. She either is oblivious or too drunk to notice. But then at the same time the guys know what they are getting into so it is their fault for being with her. I also think it is weird how Jake is always the constant man in her life. How can you see someone you like run around all the time with other partners, unless he considers anytime being with her "enough."

Thumbelina! said...

i dont believe that brett is a tease, i think she is just a person who is very confused, vonerable and wounded.

because a tease in today's context is a person who feeds off the attention given to them, by their actions of tesing someone sexually and perhaps emotionally.

Brett on the other hand is a person who seems to be searching for somone to fill the void of her long lost love. And she's only an emotional tease because they all seem to like her as a person. And they all want to help her with whatever she seems to suffer from. But she denies them that, which i believe makes her such a frustration to them.

Daniel said...

Im about half way through and the book is still slow. Also its kind of boring all it is about is a bunch of people drinking and partying

Thumbelina! said...

Daniel i agree i hate the way this book is written, and it took me FOREVER to even remotly become interested, but the plot and the characters are frightfully fasinating!

and i havent felt this way about a book since i read Atonement.

and the more i analyze what i've read in this book the more alike they become.

I agree with Daniel.I also think most of the characters in the story just follow a schedule of having lunch, drinking, going to a cafe and going to a club.

taylortang said...

Thumbelina...I suppose that is one way to look at Brett's character but to me she is a sexual tease. She follows your definition of it. She loves and takes advantage of the attention men give her and that's probably why she doesn't want to settle down. Plus it's obvious that she is in love with Jake so she isn't trying to fill a void.

Theodora Turner said...

I agree with you taytang.Back then love is really lust, so if she does't actually know what love is she can't be searching for it. But i get what thumbelina means about the void but it can't be filled if she just thinks it is lust or if she never realizes Jake is her love.

Thumbelina! said...

very true, i seem to want to see brett as a much better character. but i think thats her motivation to even be around so many men.

also i believe that her feelings towards jake are sort of meant to be a mystery because there are so many different kinds of love...& i believe that she would love to love him, but she still feels the trama from WW1. and doesnt want her feelings to develop.

..and something that taylor said in an odd way hit home...because you brought up that jake thinks that anytime spent w/ brett is "enough" for him. & i dont think thats true, for most people when they expirence a secert or forbidden love or any love in general. you feel a NEED to be near them and when its in secret i believe that he's willing to endure all of her side affairs to just share moments in time with her.

Brett, is much like a "romeo" she supposedly falls in love with people quickly but she always had Jake to go back to when everything goes wrong. The guys that go after her though do know what to expect and it is partially thier fault.

i really didn't care for thebook at all. Their days seemed to be full of only drinking and parties, not to mention the focus on money. It was really slow paced and took me forever to finish.

Do you guys think Robert and Jake are some how similar in this story.I think they have some similarities. They both are controlled by woman.Robert was controlled by Frances and Jake was controlled by Brett. They also get away from their problems by traveling or drinking.

I agree with Geo.Robert and Jake are very similar. They are helpless when it comes to women and think that running away from there problems will fix them.

Anonymous said...

i think robert and jake are somewhat controlled but jake is much less obsesive.

olderbro7 said...

yeah Daniel I agree as well they are helpless with women and running doesn't help.

Thumbelina! said...

this book really sucked. it was aimless, slow, & destructive.

it only showed how some people ruin their lives and never even put forth the effort to fight their demons. If you ask me, i think it was a waste.

sorry Mr. B but the ending was just too disappointing.

Geo24 said...

I also thought the ending was disappointing.I thought Jake was going to get payback on Cohn at the end of the story.
